SSD and upgrading motherboard?

hi guys

I'm getting very interested in SSD and I recently bought an OCZ 60gb agility 3 and I was wondering if I upgrading my motherboard to something that supports SATA 6gb/s is feasible (just for the extra 3gb/s) or that is a totally stupid move.

I'm a casual user running i7-920 and 6gb ram mainly for streaming stuff to my ps3. Probably not gonna use this comp for gaming in the near future because of school.

Thanks

P.S.

Can you guys recommend any bang for the buck SSDs?

If you have the coin to upgrade the mobo, do so; if not, don't bother. I don't think at your user level it would make a whole lot of difference in everyday use.

Check and make sure your new drive is the most current version (v2.15, I believe.) I have that very same drive and love it (although I wish it was a 120GB...)

SSD prices have been coming down recently, nearing the magical $1/GB area. Find a drive you are interested in and wait for a sale!

thanks charlie!

the drive came today and it's a sad thing to find out that my case (thermaltake spedo) did not come with 2.5 to 3.5 adapter. I don't know if you are familiar with that case, but it uses tool-less HDD trays. Do I need special adapter for my SSD or just any regular 2.5 to 3.5 will suffice?

thank you jocelyn

with my first SSD I'm so excited that I can't wait to use it. Guess with that much excitement I don't think I can wait until it ships. Imma run to micro center nearby first thing tomorrow morning and pick up whatever works :D

for the sake of safety (both to my computer and I) I'll wait just one night XD.

Does SSD need appropriate ventilation for cooling? If not then I could totally just set it in one of the empty HDD slots

X58 does not have native 6Gbit/sec SATA ports. Any board that you get with 6Gbit/sec SATA is going to use a Marvell chipset, which have their own compatibility and performance problems. In many cases, users find that using the 3Gbit/sec Intel SATA ports are FASTER than the 6Gbit/sec Marvell controllers.

Edit: However, if you wanted to upgrade to a Z68 board and an i5-2500K CPU, then you would also benefit from the Intel 6Gbit/sec SATA ports.

It'll be fine.
Also, I didn't see you had an X58 board and agree with everything VirtualLarry posted.

I just drilled two holes in one of the HDD trays and screwed it directly to the 3.5" tray. I did eventually get an adapter tray, but this worked and kept it secure.

I was a little disappointed that OCZ didn't include an adapter tray, but it's not a high-line model.

Microcenter has some fair prices on the Crucial M4s right now. Got my 128GB yesterday for $169...they're charging $99 for the 64 GB, which is only a little more than the ultra-cheapies.
