If it were me I'd have these choices.

Import: 350Z or RX8
Domestic: Mustang or GTO

Or your choices listed.....Probably a SI, under the assumption the primary use is as a daily driver. Sure fire breathing exhaust is fun but if 90% of the time your stuck in traffic I'll give up some power to have some comfort.

RX8 is slow as hell, eats more gas, does nothing good except handle well and for around 13k, the only 350's you can find are high mileage ones. GTO is a good one but Mustang insurance would be more expensive than the SRT, not the Si and you see Mustangs everywhere.

Oh and the SRT stock exhaust is EXTREMELY LOUD compared to almost any other stock exhaust on any "normal" car. It drones very loud at highways speeds and crackles and pops everywhere. You will get attention from the cops especially with the tall wing and how loud it is. Just another thing to keep in mind.

You can get good gas mileage on the SRT as well. Just keep from being in boost and you can get very good mpg like other turbo 4's.

Is that the '02-06 model, or the previous gen? IIRC, the previous gen model with the B16A2 was prone for theft.

Id there any version of the Si that isn't known for being stolen??? Kids always want the Si parts on their regular Civic. I remember they came out with that Mugen Civic and it got stripped right in the dealer lot. Just something else to keep in mind.

The Civic is a nicer all around car. The SRT is ruff, brash, and hard to drive at it's limit without lots of practice. It certainly isn't a car for 99% of the general public.

Huh?? RX8 is "slow as hell" compared to a Honda Civic?

Click

is enough to get the Si to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, though Honda claims a 6.7 is possible......With a 15.1 at 93.8-mph run

CLick

As of today, August 22nd, 2003, the revised US-Spec Horsepower Rating of the RX-8 is 238 HP for the Manual 6port RENESIS, and 197 HP for the 4port Automatic RENESIS. The performance numbers advertised ARE NOT CHANGING. They have done many tests, in house, with magazines, and outside third parties, and they are still observing RX-8's that will do 0-60 in 5.9-6.0 seconds and quarter mines in 14.5 (best observed 1/4 mile run at Pomona Raceway was 14.48 at 96.1 MPH)

I'm not seeing "slow as hell".....

As for the 350 I said I didnt know what his budget was, but heres one for 15.3 with 25,000 miles. Myabe he simply doesnt have 2 to 4k more to spent, I dont know. If he doesnt then no, a 350Z is probably not a realistic option.

I dont know if Mustang insurance would be more then an SRT, I havent priced either. I'm a bit skeptical the SRT would be cheaper, but again I havent priced either so no clue.

I didn't say slow as hell compared to a civic but slow as hell compared to what else you listed and for it's price it does nothing well other than handle. Mid 14's with a low trap speed, bad mpg, and too many other things to list for the price of them, not worth it.

I agree, back in 2005 chrysler was selling these for invoice pricing or less. I wouldn't even pay 10k for one, keep looking.

so the consensus here is:

SRT: fast/harsh/low resale/lower quality interior
SI: slower than SRT/better drivability/high resale/ higher quality interior than SRT

Pretty much. Nothing else to it.

I will never recommend a SRT to another type of person unless they want something like that. I have never told someone to get the SRT cus it seriously is for a very small minority of people. The Si's are nicer, and easier to drive. I really did enjoy driving my friend's Si. Very smooth.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the neon is basically a deathtrap if you crash it. The civic is going to offer a lot more protection in the event of an accident. That said, the SRT would still be a tempting car for me...

Please be careful with whatever car you choose.

QFT. The RX-8 is a sharp-looking car, but it's not all that fast. The auto ones particularly are pretty slow. The chassis and handling are excellent, but the powerplant leaves a lot to be desired. The SRT, GTO, Vette, hell even the Civic, are not too expensive to make a little to a lot more power out of, but the RX-8 is $$$ to modify, and it takes serious work to get any improvement. The fuel economy is also simply atrocious.

OP : Forgot to mention, but low-miles G35 Coupe 6MT are getting into the price range you're talking about. Good mix of luxury and adequate performance, within a couple % of the 350Z (same powerplant / gearbox, similar weight). A ton of mods for the Z carry over to the G.

For heaps of cheap power, hard to beat the GTO right now though. If you're a good driver, you're talking high 12s / very low 13s stock. Toss a SC into the mix (or do a conventional build, cams, cats, etc), and you're reaching serious speeds.
