I've got a bottle of Kikkoman sriracha in my fridge because walmart was out of Huy Fong. It's good, but not nearly as good in my opinion.

If it isn't just about a smell there should be detectable levels of irritants in the air right? And doctors examinations including pictures of victims to back up the claim of actual irritants being released right?

Wonder if it's similar to pepper spray wafting in the air. That stuff sucks and it an annoying irritant.

Yeah, I'm sure you wouldn't complain if the smell was permeating your house

Not even that. I'm sure cooking the chili's releases capsicum into the air and could create a noticible burning sensation in their eyes, nose, etc. I love sriracha but I would have to side with the town on this one.

I can't stand the smell of that shit, I would imagine the factory where it's made is 10x that. I don't blame the people at all. I don't understand how why stuff is as popular as it is, but I have people telling me every day that PBR's one of the tastiest beers. So I'm not surprised Sriracha's all the rage.

I guess things would be different in that scenario, but I'm skeptical that anyone would be able to go house shopping without noticing the smell.

I'm not. I fly airplanes for a living, and you'd be amazed how many people buy houses off the ends of runways and then bitch about the airplane noise that's been there since the 1930's.

They demand the airport be shut down, they try to curb the operating hours, set noise limits, demand ridiculous departure paths, and so on. All because they were too stupid to do their homework.

SereneLove at 5:51 PM November 10, 2013 All the Irwindale City Council members are all Latino. Latino Politicians often exploit their own people success for money as in some Latin and Central American countries. There many Latino own companies like Jacmar in Irwindale. It looks like Mr Tran, Asian, did not want to pay shakedown money to some of the Latino City Council members and their family. Some of the Council member is indeed corrupt, not all of them. Others was getting misinformation or bullied to follow along.

No money or shakedown, time to go after the company.
Don't let Irwindale become another City of Bell, Moreno Valley, Vernon and other cities.
darthvader at 3:22 AM November 10, 2013 "Huy Fong took the loan and contributed $250,000 a year to the city of Irwindale each year as part of the deal, Tran said." Hmmm.
Sounds like a simple shake-down to me. Me thinks if Huy Fong increases his 'contribution' the issue will go away. Perhaps he needs to add a little more 'grease' to his famous recipe.
I got all the info I need in these comments.

Edit: So apparently, the complaint started by one of the Council member's son. Things that make you go "Hmm..."

I wonder if any hard charging member of the press would pick this lead up.

I believe this angle was reported by The L.A. Times about a week ago.

The air quality regulators have investigated the complaint each time and haven't confirmed a problem.

If you have to refrigerate it then it's not sriracha. ;)

Irwindale is a shithole, and they are lucky to have Huy Fong there. They are employing locals and getting local taxes and interest from the loan. Now they want more ...

Let's milk this cow dry.

fucking bullshit, judge sided with city. Factory shut down. See bolded, there is no credible evidence....

http://business.financialpost.com/2...ed-to-partially-shut-down-by-california-city/

LOS ANGELES — A judge has given a dose of cold water to Sriracha, ruling Tuesday that the factory that manufactures the trendy hot sauce must partially shut down after neighbours complained of the spicy smells it was producing.
Judge Robert H. O’Brien found in favour of the city of Irwindale where Sriracha recently relocated, saying sauce maker Huy Fong Foods must stop any operations that could be causing the odours and make changes to mitigate them.
O’Brien’s injunction, given in response to a lawsuit filed by the city on Oct. 21, does not specify what types of actions are required or force the factory to shut down altogether, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Huy Fong Foods did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Times or The Associated Press.

The company had previously argued that there is no reason to close the plant now because harvest season and subsequent grinding of red-hot Jalapeno peppers, the sauce’s key ingredient, has passed. That suggests that the injunction may not have a major immediate effect on the company’s production or the nation’s hot sauce supply as Huy Fong keeps up its year-round mixing and bottling.
The judge acknowledged there was a “lack of credible evidence” linking locals’ complaints of breathing trouble and watering eyes to the factory. But he said the odour that could be “reasonably inferred to be emanating from the facility” is, for residents, “extremely annoying, irritating and offensive to the senses warranting consideration as a public nuisance.”
Irwindale officials commended the decision.
“We believe it’s a strong ruling that acknowledges and is reflective of the concerns that the community has raised about the health impacts of the odour,” City Attorney Fred Galante said.
The case could still go to trial, but Galante said the city would like to see a settlement outside court, and does not want to shut down Sriracha altogether.
“We’re going to try to keep having a conversation with Huy Fong,” Galante said, and hopes to find a collaborative way to “make sure the odour problems are addressed.”

It looks like the war against Huy Fong isn't over yet...

http://news.yahoo.com/california-city-declares-sriracha-maker-nuisance-043828172.html

California city declares Sriracha maker a nuisance

IRWINDALE, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California city has declared the factory that produces the popular Sriracha hot sauce a public nuisance.

The Irwindale City Council's action Wednesday night gives the factory 90 days to make changes to stop the spicy odors that prompted complaints from some residents last fall. Declaring a public nuisance will allow city officials to enter the factory and make changes if the odors persist after the deadline.

Damn, they gave Huy Fong HUGE tax breaks and incentives to move TO Irwindale...now they want them to leave?

http://eclectic24.wordpress.com/2014/03/19/sriracha-success-brings-trouble/

It will serve them right if they do leave. What the fuck did they expect from a plant that makes hot sauce? The gently wafting scents of roses and flower petals?

I'm very pro huy-fong; it seems like they can remedy this fairly easy

Officials with the South Coast Air Quality Management District have been performing tests at the facility and have offered to help the company craft a mitigation plan. Although they would not release the test results, AQMD officials indicated that the smell issues could be resolved with active carbon filters -- a technology the company has used in the past.

Once the City Council adopts an expected official resolution at its next meeting, Huy Fong Foods will have about 90 days to mitigate the odor. If it doesn't, City Council members on Wednesday asserted the city has the right to eventually enter the factory and make the changes itself, while assessing the costs to the factory.

I really want to know who will be providing the filters to Huy Fong, and at what price, and how much it will cost for all the ”engineering” and ”planning” and ”compliance assurance” consultancies that are sure to be packaged with this ”deal”.
