A Pakistani minister, Sardar Nabil Ahmed Gabol, reportedly told private Geo TV that evidence suggested the attackers came across the border from India.

He said the assault came in reaction to the Mumbai attacks, and was a "declaration of open war on Pakistan by India".

Didn't take long to blame India....

If India wanted to attack Pak, they would have done so long back with their massive nuclear warheads. Pak is the terror hub of the world- you better hope taliban don;t get hands on nukes.

Salutes yes but I bet some of them were killed before they even knew what was really happening, as they were in a police escort.

Shut the fuck up about things like this, you have had and now have a government that is negotiating with Talibans who have killed many thousands of children. (they prefer 12 year old girls which they rape and then insert their gun and shoot them to "kill their seed" they live for hours, even days after that)

You don't get to claim no crown before they are stopped and since you refuse to do so, others will.

You're Pakistani, send an e-mail about this problem instead of pretending that it doesn't exist.

LAHORE: Gunmen attacked Sri Lanka's cricket team in a gun and grenade assault Tuesday in Lahore that killed eight people including six police personnel and wounded five members of the squad.

"The plan was apparently to kill the Sri Lankan team but the police came in the way and forced the attackers to run away," Lahore's police chief Habib-ur Rehman said.

"They appeared to be well-trained terrorists," he told reporters.

Rehman said up to 12 gunmen ambushed the team's convoy close to the Gaddafi stadium with rockets, hand grenades and automatic weapons, unleashing a fierce gun battle with security forces. The gunmen fled after the ambush, triggering a giant manhunt.

Witnesses said the up market district of Lahore, home to many designer boutiques, was transformed into a battle zone as gunmen hidden behind trees opened fire in a sophisticated, coordinated attack.

Police officials said two civilians and six policemen guarding the players were killed in the attack as the team was heading for the third day's play in the second Test against Pakistan. Sri Lankan officials said seven team players and a coach were wounded.

Star batsman Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavithana were treated in hospital but out of danger, while Jayawardene, vice-captain Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilina Thushara and Suranga Lokumal had minor injuries. Assistant coach Paul Farbrace, a British national, was also hurt.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani also strongly condemned the "terrorist" attack and ordered an inquiry.

Two air force helicopters evacuated the Sri Lankan team from the stadium to Lahore airport, from where they were to be flown home late Tuesday. Experts defused two car bombs and recovered grenades, three kilograms (6.6 pounds) of explosives, a pistol and a detonating cable.

Blood stained the front seats of a vehicle used by Pakistan's elite force that had been assigned to protect the team, the van raked with gunfire with its wheels shot up and radio system disabled.

The attack has sparked condemnation from around the world and threw a massive question mark over the future of the game in Pakistan -- a co-host for the 2011 cricket World Cup.

We aren't negotiating with the same taliban u are talking about. They are different. Evil? yes. But they don't rape 12 year old girls. And what the fuck are you talking about? There has been no shortage of sexual assault by the American military against detainees. That's only what has been made public. We have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. You can say it was a "few" (who haven't even been bought to justice), but then you have no right to make a few taliban represent the whole muslim world.

Son, i've seen this with my own eyes, i've followed their trail for a LONG time and the Taliban does do these things, among others, like mutilating others by spraying acid and bombing schools because they allow girls.

They are the worst of the worst and each and every one of them needs to die.

Don't you fucking come up with some defense out of ignorance.

I know what what goes on behind closed doors, you're going to have to trust me on this or at least search for my posts that later became truth.

The US military isn't in Pakistan, just a FYI, and i'm not American, that would be someone elses problem, not mine.

It will unless we can eliminate all foreign forces operating in our territory. That includes Uzbek, Arab, Afghan militants and also includes all foreign armies.

what is death to IDF? Israeli or Indian Defense Force.. I guess it is time for India to bring Pakistan under its wing. For over 50 years, they have not shown any sign of progress...

This is what happens when you create Taliban to counter India and Afghanistan, but I guess that strategy appears to be backfiring. Before too long, entire country of Pakistan is going to look like Afghanistan before 9/11 with the Arm Forces and Nuclear Weapons in the hands of Taliban. I think they deserved each other.. Misery seeks company..

Just shut the fuck up.

You have nothing to submit but mindless allegations and clueless accusations and it's completely and utterly useless.

Obviously cricket isn't as rough as the contact sports like US football, rugby etc. But they break fingers, pull muscles, injure backs etc. Anyway, since when does it have to be rough for it to be called a sport? In terms of fan following, it's easily the worlds number 2 sport.

A friend of mine dislocated his knee playing table tennis FWIW. Any sport can cause injuries.

Table tennis is fucking rough because it's so fast, you burn more calories per set playing table tennis than real tennis.

I think it was mostly a joke, my post about the kevlar coated rugby players was, anyway.

Great line.

Too bad, though, as the Pakistani's love their cricket and it's a great game, if you like watching grass grow.

It's about as much fun as baseball, both are were invented so that girls would have something to do while the boys played football (and by football i mean real football) and rugby, same with basketball, also a girls game.

so much fail in one sentence.

Read up on the history of all three sports, they were indeed girls games originally and the girls were not allowed to play football (real football) or rugby.

Cricket ref: Pakistan police fled during ambush

What was that again?

LAHORE, Pakistan ? A British referee accused police Wednesday of abandoning him and other match officials in the deadly ambush of the Sri Lankan cricket team, as officers said their manhunt for the attackers was making little headway.

The allegations by Chris Broad were denied by Pakistani cricket and government officials, who pointed out that six police officers were killed in the attack Tuesday by up to 14 assailants toting assault rifles, grenades and at least one rocket launcher.

The attack in the eastern city of Lahore came at a time of mounting political turmoil in the nuclear-armed country and added to fears it was losing the battle against Islamist extremists blamed for a series of high-profile attacks.

There are also concerns over whether Pakistani police will be able to bring the perpetrators to justice ? underscored by conflicting accounts of the investigation offered Wednesday. One police official said several suspects had been taken into custody, though none of the gunmen was tracked down. Hours later, however, another official denied anyone had been arrested.

Referee Broad was traveling in a van in the same convoy as the Sri Lankan team bus, which stopped for around 1 1/2 minutes as gunfire rung out before gunning for the stadium.

His driver was killed and a fellow passenger ? fourth official Ahsan Raza ? was hit by a bullet and critically injured.

"There was not a sign of a policeman anywhere," Broad said Wednesday following his arrival back in Britain. "They had clearly left the scene and left us to be sitting ducks." He did not say how long his vehicle was stationary. Other witnesses have spoken of police and the gunmen trading fire for around 15 minutes during the attack.

"How can Chris Broad say this when six policemen were killed?" Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ijaz Butt told The Associated Press. He declined further comment until he had a chance to speak to Broad.

Lahore police chief beloved patriot Habibur Rehman said police raided locations in Lahore and surrounding districts and arrested "some suspects." He gave no details of their alleged roles, or the precise number detained, but said some were picked up at a Lahore hostel, where bloodstained clothes were also found.

He added: "So far we have not made any headway toward the perpetrators."

But later, Salah ud Din Niazi, the officer in charge of the probe, told The Associated Press no arrests had been made and no one had been questioned.

None of the gunmen was killed, and all apparently escaped into this teeming city after a gunbattle with the convoy's security detail.

Pakistani police have a poor record of investigating terrorist attacks and often round up people in the immediate aftermath of assaults who are never charged or release contradictory information.

Islamist militants are widely suspected to be behind the attack, but authorities have not explicitly stated this.

"Our guys were getting hurt and screaming, but we couldn't help each other," Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said when the team arrived home in Colombo early Wednesday. "None of us thought that we would come alive out of the situation."

Veteran Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan spoke of the chaos on the bus during the attack.

"All the while bullets were being sprayed at our bus, people around me were shouting," he said. "I am glad to be back."

But Jayawardene added that growing up in Sri Lanka, which has seen scores of terrorist attacks related to the country's civil war, meant the players had a "natural instinct" that made them immediately hit the floor at the first sound of gunfire.

"We are used to hearing, seeing these things. Firing, bombings. So we ducked under our seats when the firing began," he told reporters.

The attack ended Pakistan's hopes of hosting international cricket teams ? or any high profile sports events ? for months, if not years. Even before Tuesday, most squads chose not to tour the cricket-obsessed country for security reasons

Pakistan has a web of militant networks, some with links to al-Qaida and the Taliban, which have staged other high-profile strikes in a bid to destabilize the government and punish it for its support of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan.

The assault bore many similarities to last year's three-day hostage drama in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai, and one group likely to fall under suspicion is Lashkar-e-Taiba, the network blamed for the November attacks, when 10 gunmen targeted luxury hotels, a Jewish center and other sites, killing 164 people.

The group has been targeted by Pakistani authorities since then, and its stronghold is in eastern Pakistan.

Besides the six police officers, a driver of a vehicle in the convoy was also killed. Seven Sri Lankan players, a Pakistani umpire and a coach from Britain were wounded, none with life-threatening injuries.

more confirmation on the security forces running away.

Security 'left us to be sitting ducks' claims Broad

Cricinfo staff

March 4, 2009

Chris Broad: 'We were promised high level security and in our hour of need that security vanished. There was not a sign of a policeman anywhere' © PA Photos

Chris Broad landed back in Manchester and launched a stinging attack on the security in Lahore at the time of yesterday's attack which left eight people dead, while expressing his concern that the incident sounds a 'death knell' for cricket in Pakistan.

Broad, who was the ICC's match referee for the Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the city, accused the Pakistani authorities of leaving match officials as "sitting ducks" and claiming that players and officials arriving for the Test were not offered sufficient protection despite assurances given by the Pakistan board.

"I'm angry with the Pakistani security forces," Broad said. "We were promised high level security and in our hour of need that security vanished. There was not a sign of a policeman anywhere. They had clearly gone, left the scene and left us to be sitting ducks. I had an inkling before the Test match leg of the tour that something might happen. I certainly didn't think this was going to happen."

Broad's claims that he had flagged concerns about the security before the start of the series will raise issues. "I raised my concerns with the ICC before the tour started and they passed on those concerns to the Pakistan board. They assured me through e-mail that all security would be taken care of, presidential-style security. And clearly that didn't happen.

"When we were in the van we weren't aware of what was going on outside. But after the incident when you watch the TV pictures you can clearly see the white van we were in, next to the ambulance in the middle of a roundabout, with terrorists shooting into our van and past our van and not a sign of a policeman anywhere."

Broad has been praised for throwing himself on top of fellow official Ahsan Raza as the vehicle they were travelling in came under fire. "I am not a hero," he said. "Most of us were just waiting for a bullet to hit us."

Raza was shot in the back during the attack and was rushed to Lahore's Service hospital for surgery on a collapsed right lung and a damaged liver. Hospital staff on Wednesday told Cricinfo that the operation was successful and, while Raza remained in a critical condition, he was likely to be released from the intensive care unit in the next three-to-four days.

Broad went on to say that some of the security forces fled when the shooting started. "At some stage ? someone opened the door of the van and an elite policeman threw himself inside and lay on top of me. That wasn't particularly brave. When the shooting stopped, I shouted at him to drive us away but he said: 'I don't drive.'"

For all Broad's anger at the security concerns, he was just as dismayed at the impact that the attack could have on the future of cricket in the country. "They have a lot of very talented cricketers, and I feel sorry for the cricketers and for the cricket-mad public of Pakistan," he said. "But this is a bit of a death knell for cricket in Pakistan and I feel sorry for those people. I can't see it going on for the foreseeable future.

"Ijaz Butt, the chairman [of the PCB] has come out and said that friends will come to Pakistan but I don't think they have any friends in world cricket that will go to Pakistan after this has happened. Sri Lanka were a friendly country - they wanted to go, they wanted to support Pakistan. I don't think they will be going back and certainly India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa won't be keen."

Broad said the ICC would, in future, possibly have to take more direct responsibility for security arrangements rather than leaving matters to individual boards. "There are countries who have their own security experts," he said. "I know England have Reg Dickason from Australia. Dickason didn't think Pakistan was safe for anyone to go to. He was amazed the Sri Lanka tour went ahead. But he's not advising Sri Lanka.

"Maybe there's something for the ICC to look at - that they themselves take the safety concerns into consideration and make the decisions."

ISLAMABAD: Undeterred by the Lahore attack on its national cricket squad, the Sri Lankan government is willing to send the team to Pakistan again to play matches soon.

Speaking at a joint stakeout with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said: ?Any invitation if extended for Sri Lankan team to visit Pakistan in near future would receive our highest consideration.?

It is believed that the encouraging statement of the Sri Lankan Forigen Minister will restore the shaken trust of cricket playing nations on Pakistan the future of cricket in the country is not bleak.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister did not mention the exact time frame of when the Sri Lankan team will pay a visit to Pakistan.

The visiting cricket team had ended the 14-month international cricket drought in Pakistan after the Indian team?s refusal to visit Pakistan due to security concerns. Bogollagama said Sri Lanka would not like Pakistan to be isolated in the cricketing world.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister said: ?We will play our role to further strengthen our ties in the cricketing world.?

Pakistan, also the co-host of the cricket World Cup 2011, is under immense pressure from some cricket playing nations over security concerns while the recent terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricketers raised their concerns.

Six police commandos were killed and at least two players were injured when gunmen attacked vehicles carrying the Sri Lankan players in Lahore on Tuesday.

?I hope Pakistan will rise up to expectations in terms of security a country has to maintain. It would be pity if we get cowed down after this attack? said the Minister.

He said Sri Lanka resiliently fought terrorism on its soil turning every terrorist strike into opportunity to defeat the menace and it would be unlike of a nation like Sri Lanka to be intimidated by such a cowardly attack.

I think this is stupid. We don't deserve anything anything anymore. Oh well. Too bad. But I don't want people dying because of no reason.

If this is not the fault of Islam gone mad then what is it?

why can't they realize religion is an individual thing and they need to murder themselves before they hurt another..

How stupid can they be so stupid to believe Allah will accept their reasoning for murdering any of his children who were not in the act of harming another

When will they start imprisoning all Imams who preach violence in the name of Islam?

^ Illiteracy is the word, less educated a man is the more fanatic and superstitious he will be - as he becomes dependent on others to guide him. This is exactly why they discourage education and media, they fear one among those fanatics will rise and question the leaders who promotes fanaticism.
