I have a Visioneer 5800 scanner that has been working fine for the past year, but now it enjoys "undetecting" and then redetecting itself in Windows, causing those little "duh-ding" and "ding-duh" sounds. I had it on a powered USB hub and now I have it plugged into my motherboard directly. I went into device manager to uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under all of the USB root hubs, but this didn't fix the problem. Is there something else I should try or do you think my scanner is starting to die?
 
That is a chroinic USB problem. Put it back in the hub like it was. If it has an alternate way of connecting, try it.
 
I'm having the problem with it in the hub as well as plugged into my motherboard directly...
 
i have always ended up gettig a scsi adapter for my scanners...the USB hookup never seems to work well with scanners..dunno why, scsi seems faster and much more stable..you can find a cheapo scsi card online, the cable will actually cost you more than the card..but if you do alot of scanning, it's worth it to end the frustration..
 
I already have a scsi card, but it's in my server. My scanner doesn't support SCSI. I'd like to avoid buying another scanner if possible, since I only use this one for rebate forms and the like.
 
Until you solve the problem, you can just go to Control Panels > Sounds > Sounds Tab and disable your sound scheme.

This will at least get rid of the annoying "ding" sound... 🙂
