Alky's more or less right.

Alky is a troll. Having squirrels has nothing to do with having a clean house.

Those tree rats are just looking for somewhere to build a nest. Under your roof makes a better nest then in the top of a tree.

The point remains that they're getting in due to poor security. Dealing with them after they're in the house isn't fixing the problem.

If you'd have read, I mentioned it could be maintenance issues as well.

Have you ever seen a squirrel up close? They have feet that can chew through wood like it was nothing. They will even chew through the screen attic vents.

I've held a squirrel in my hands. I have a ~275 year old oak in my back yard that probably has dozens of squirrels living in it. I also have several other nut trees scattered around the yard, and the tree rats use my roof as a shortcut to get from the back yard to the front. I think I'm pretty familiar with squirrels, and their habits ;^)

They are fun to watch.

If a squirrel wants in your attic, the only thing that is going to stop them is metal plating. And even then, I have heard of them chewing through that thin flashing material.

Especially on a yankee flipper.:p

As far as metal, they have gnawed a nice serrated edge on the decorative top of the in laws gate. Sharpening teeth, I'd guess.

The problem with keeping them out of your house is they will just go somewhere else. They had chewed through my neighbors roof and setup nest in her attic. She had someone scare them out and seal the hole. Then came to my house and chewed through my cabel vent blade and setup shop in my attic. So yes, you can keep forcing them to relocate and making it another homeowners problem and doing more damage, but you're not addressing the real issue that there's an overpopulation problem. You can fix this by trapping them and relocating them to a more rural area, or kill them which I have no problem doing since they really are just rats with furry tails. I mean FFS people don't trap and relocate rats, why the fuck should I care about a squirrel?

Shotgun, .22, hippie-friendly animal trap, whatever you need, but don't do any "maintenance" that your landlady/property management company doesn't sign off on.

On the upside, if you do go the "violent and sadistic" route I've heard that squirrel stew can be pretty tasty.
