Squatting toilets?

Anyone ever come across one of these in the US? Just came back from a trip through Asia and saw these squatting toilets in at least four different countries. Did some Googling when I got home and see that they're used throughout Europe and the Middle East as well.

Apparently, it's "healthier" to squat when doing #2 than it is to sit on a toilet. Looks like there's a lower occurrence of colon cancer and other colon related diseases in countries where these squatting toilets are used.

I'm having a really hard time believing that last part. Comparing countries and rates of cancer isn't really a real scientific way to do that...

I ran into some of these in the balkans, though most toilets there are conventional sit-down style.

I might even prefer this for public washroom, no filthy ass seat and such. They often have a foot button to flush, too.


Third world setups, with no paper and manual 'flushing' are fucked, though.

I saw these a lot when I was stationed in Turkey. Word of advice, don't shake hands with them over there with your left hand.

I'd imagine that the cancer rates are more to do differences in diet rather than the type of crapper that you use.

You think it might have something to do with the populations of these countries not eating 14 megatons of processed meats unlike the countries at the top of the bowel cancer table.

I avoid taking a crap in public at all costs.

I remember when I was at a club and this guy was taking a crap in the only toilet in the bathroom while people were screaming and yelling. Just across from the men's room, women were waiting in a huge line so they could use the bathroom. I just kept thinking how could you take a crap with so many people in one room!

My leg muscles can barely handle these and I can't speak about cancer rates but I personally think these toilets are WAY cleaner than our western toilets. Culturally though I can't get behind them and there's no way I would want one of these in my home. Never seen one of these in Europe though. Asia yes. Africa can't remember.

There's loads in France, and I'm sure that I've used a few in Spain and Italy as well.

I seem to remember that the bus station in Geneva had some as well.

What's your cultural problem with them? You just go in, poop, wipe, flush and leave. It's not like you have to sing an anthem or anything (feel free to though).

I had to use them 50% of the time growing up in Vietnam, until the age of 11. I don't miss them. At least I had a place to poop, many homes didn't even have proper sewage system.

I more meant that I was raised with western toilets and just can't get into a full switch. It's no different than how I don't have a problem with eating with my hands in India but culturally I was raised to use utensils and given a choice I will always opt to use them. Given a choice between the two toilets side by side I will always prefer the western toilet. With that said though when I am not given a choice I don't mind using them. I do compromise when I use them by using paper. Going the full route and wiping with my hand and the hose is never going to happen.

I actually have an easier time eliminating with a squat toilet that with a sitting one. I don't even have to push, much less strain. It seems like when you get into that position and as soon as the weight rests on your thighs, the bowel movement just begins easy as can be. it's almost unreal how smoothly it just exits and with barely any intervention from you. Its also easier to wipe in that position too, your ass cheeks are way more spread open then when you are sitting.

The bad part: It is harder to use one of these toilets while wearing pants. Even if I push my pants all the way to my ankles, I have to be careful to not pee all over the back of my pants. You just gotta remember to push your johnson down and aim further backwards. Having your pants around your ankles constrains your leg movement so if you slip or need to baance yourself, it is the same effect as having your shoelaces tied together. When you are balancing over the can, this can be disastrous.

The smell of your own shit is worse too. Your shit just falls on the porcelain and sits there all smelly. Unlike a western toilet where the poo falls into water which has the added effect of masquerading some of the odor.

I really only like these toilets for how easy it is to #2 and for the fact that the only part of your body that really touches the toilet is the soles of your shoes (I never sit on a public toilet and always make a nest of TP when I go).

I have gone in the woods and corn fields plenty of times. It isn't comfortable trying to squat with pants around your ankles. The best way is to take them off and bend your knees inward, it's the best shit you'll ever have.

I went to Japan last year and nearly all the town toilets are squatters! Who ever invented the squat toilet should get hanged. Sorry.

Never seen them in the US.

They were pretty much the norm though when I was in Okinawa...
