So I picked up Maxim magazine yesterday, and they have a photo of Aki from the Final Fantasy movie. I have to say, SquareSoft is really the leader in 3D cinematics. Does anyone know which modeller they use? Which rendering engine? I'll bet they built their own.. but maybe they use 3D Studio Max.

If anyone knows for sure, post. I'm curious to know what the master uses.

I thought Squaresoft hired an outside company for the CGI. There's some little-known company in Japan that does that stuff.

I think I remember when I saw preview for it, they took 200-300 people from 12 different companies to make it in 3 years. Pretty sure that's what it said. Don't know about what they used, i'm guessing it was some million dollar proprietary peice of software.

It's amazing how realistic computer animation has gotten. I remember a long time ago I saw a TV special about computer animation and how the scientists predicted that someday they would be so realistic we could not tell the difference between a human being and a computer animation. I just thought, "yeah,...right!". But it is turning out to be true!

I can't wait to see the Final Fantasy movie! :)

The cinematics are just rendered scenes so it's not really an engine in the same vein as Q3 engine or UT. Anyhow, I'm not sure what they use, but most of the 3d packages can do that without a problem. It's the creativity that really makes the use of any of those proggies.

I'm pretty sure they use Alias Wavefront Maya for Modelling, Renderman + some propriatary software for rendering. Some After Effect and Flame/Inferno for Compositing. :)
