Final Fantasy returns to Nintendo

Square and Nintendo reach an agreement that will bring Final Fantasy back to Nintendo's
platforms after a five-year absence.

According to the Saturday edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Square and Nintendo have
reached an agreement that will bring Final Fantasy games to the GameCube and Game Boy
Advance platforms. Under the agreement, Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi will allocate
money from Fund Q--a fund Yamauchi set up in January to help encourage software
development--to a new Square-affiliated development house. In return, Square will establish
the new development house with help from Akitoshi Kawazu, a director from the Final
Fantasy development team, by the end of this month.

The Square affiliate is expected to release games for both the GameCube and Game Boy
Advance before the end of the year. Square properties other than Final Fantasy were not
mentioned in the report.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.

OMG, I would kill for a FF game for GBA! Even if they just ported FF II & III, I'd be ecstatic.

<< Vortex: I have a PS2. Don't want to have to spend money on a GC. >>

It said they were making a totally new "development house" for the Nintendo stuff so I strongly doubt that it would take away from anything they do on other systems. They wouldn't stop developing for the PS2 anyway, it is definately the most popular of the 3 systems. I have both GC and PS2 but I'm really happy that FF is returning to Nintendo... probably becuase I remember all the great stuff on SNES :D

Not only will that happen, but we'll also (most likely) get those awesome complete remakes of FF1,
FF2(j), FF3(j), and Final Fantasy Legend (with FF4 and FF6-like graphics) that they made for the
Wonderswan.

Awesome! I just might have to buy a GC when the FF games come out. It'll probably take some time for the games to come out though, I'd figure a year for the GC at least. For the GBA, probably shorter, if they are gonna do direct ports of the older FF series.

Other than FFXI, I wouldn't expect anything for the Gamecube until well into 2003.
This is almost all about the GBA, which will probably receive a dozen or so games
within the next year.

i don't think squaresoft is LITERALLY going back to nintendo. sounds like a new company will be made with someone from square leading the way. pretty smart on square's part. they can cater to nintendo fans under a different name while still loyal to sony.

The way I understand things with Squaresoft is that a) FF XI will be available for Xbox, GC, PS2, and PC b) They are developing for Xbox as well (maybe not as much but then again I don't count GBA, because it's not a console) so in reality this isn't good news for GC owners, it's good news for anyone that like FF, because their MMORPG will have players from Xbox, PS2, GC and PC....that will be quite impresive....

"Square's statement that Final Fantasy XI will be released for multiple systems makes
it a prime candidate for release on the GameCube, though it remains a PlayStation 2
and PC exclusive
for now."

With Sony's part-ownership, the likelyhood of any Square title reaching the X-Box is
very slim.

"A Nintendo PR representative in Japan has informed GameSpot Japan that a
port of Final Fantasy Tactics is a likely candidate for the Game Boy Advance."
