Actually, that's a damn fine idea. Not only will they fit in fridges better, but they're easier and less expensive to ship because they pack tighter.

Those Japanese are always up to something...

Bombs are generally round
I think they're taking the roundness out of watermelons and using them for bomb production. Pearl harbor 2, noooo!

Talk about STUPID! Who's going to pay $83 for a watermelon when you can buy normal oval ones at a couple of bucks normally!

Food in Japan is expensive. A standard watermelon is like US$15.

I saw a poll on CNN.com regarding this earlier. Hah! I didn't know where the story was for it though.

Obviously you haven't been to Japan or weren't thinking out of the box on that statement.

Watermelons are one of the most expensive fruits in Japan and can cost upto $150 dollars for a nice one. It is considered one of the supreme deserts since how expensive watermelons cost. Its not uncommon to pay $15 dollars for a small slice of watermelon as desert after dinner in restraunts.

Fist of all, if you're lucky enough to find a standard watermelon in japan.. its not going to cost 15$... it costs more like 30-50$..maybe even more...i cant remember... but i know they were damn expensive.... most things are more expensive over there because their economy is higher... pay, living, all that stuff.. more expensive...

You guys ever see that Simpsons episode where they go to Japan? Homer sees the square watermellons, and they're like 20,000 yen. He picks one up, it pops back to normal shape, and he drops it. Of course there's the characteristic "Doh!"

Have you guys been to Japan and looked at the fridges? Definitely smaller than what we have here, so this makes sense. Sure, the price tag is high, but the intentions are good and I'll bet a few people will buy 'em. I'd surely buy one for a "neato" factor, but that's all I'd buy with such a premium. In the states, watermelons are cheap, but in Japan, they are more expensive.
