square image on cpus.. what is it?

I'm sure most of you have probably seen these square things before: pic .. ive seen them on both intel and amd cpus, so theyre not limited to any one ..

i think they might be some kind of anti-remarking thing .. anyone know for sure?

No offense but it would be a 2d barcode, standard ones are 1d because it's scanned in a line.
