Huge news today in Japan as Square Enix announced it reformed business model, and a significant rise in the likelihood of a Final Fantasy VII remake.

Late Wednesday night, on their Japanese web site, Square Enix announced that it will be working under a new business model, focused more on re-releasing existing titles and creating sequels to older games.

This change is no doubt due to the overwhelming success of its latest projects, which have all be remakes of Final Fantasy games for the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance platforms. These remakes have done surprisingly well and have prompted Square Enix to look into the remade games further and for other systems as well. As a result, the company has decided that remakes and sequels will do well enough to keep the company in the green for quite some time.

This news will no doubt start an uproar in Final Fantasy VII remake rumors that have slowly lost their credibility since E3 of 2005. But even more exciting news to some is the possibility of other Square Enix franchises being dug up from the grave and re-released on next gen platforms.

Hell, I will take FFVI remake too!

I think a remake of 6 and 7 on the PS3 is needed...mmm.

I think for 7 it's more of a "when" question than an "if" question.

But then again, I hope they still release new games as well...I don't want remakes over and over.

I'd rather they focus on making new content, rather than rehash old games. Don't misunderstand me, some of the older FF games were fantastic, but too many companies these days produce nothing but sequels.

Well, FFVI already has a remake for the GBA.. that game took me almost 3 months to find, but I finally picked up a copy from Circuit City.

Yes, but I wouldn't mind Kefka mocking me in HD glory, not to mention Uematsu's best work with real instruments.

Right, and that's different from making 20 Final Fantasy games in what way? :disgust:

it wouldn't be so bad if they were good. i think that last one i enjoyed was 8. FF1 is probably my favorite.

I'd buy a PC FF7 remake in a heartbeat. I'd pay good money for it too. I would not buy a PS3 just to play it though.

The Final Fantasy VII remake was more than just a rumour at one point. During the earlier years of the PS2, they announced that they would be remaking Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX for the PS2.

I'm all for an FF7 remake, but I wonder if the game is still playable out of chibi mode. FF7 was less mushy (or seemed that way) than later FF games, and that might be because of the fact that everything was depicted in chibi mode. If you've seen Advent Children, you can see how they've turned Cloud into a great big pvssy. Being able to clearly depict everyone in full 3D might give us some additional crying and whining that we did not see in the original game and I would hate to see that happen. Also, I'm not sure they can implement some of the mini games and other gameplay elements from the original FF7 because they only work in FF7's style of 3D.

And let me add this while I'm doing a little rant about FF games. I'm tired of that multi-colored, jewel-encrusted crap. It started with FF9 and it hasn't stopped since. Everything's become unnecesssarily elaborate. Bring back the simple grey metal/steel colored weapons and outfits with plenty of cloth and folds and stop jewel encrusting eveything. Just give characters armor and leave it at that. No more multi-colored, jewel-encrusted bs please.

Well, big disconnect here. The article jumps to talking about remakes - but the statement before say "re-releasing existing titles and creating sequels to older games"

Re-releasing is not remaking, and square has by now proved beyond all shadows of a doubt that they'll quite happily do a second rate emulation of an older game, tack on some anime cutscenes and sell it all over again.
Especially when you take into account the Wii virtual console and Xbox live arcade, I have to wonder if perhaps they mean exactly what they say, and we're gonna start seeing bucketloads of old square games popping up all over again on those services.

The beginning of the end for Square-Enix... Now, for next few years, they'll simply do half-ass ports/emu from their massive library of RPG games.

I was under the impression that all they did was make sequels and remakes already...

While I absolutely loved all those games the first time around, I'm a little concerned by this. Sure, a remake would be cool, but I've played it already!! I want something new. FFXII was awesome. They're still bringing out good new material.

Even though they've sold well, I think that the sequels and spinoffs they have made are crap. Advent Children? Like a bad kung fu movie. Dirge of Cerberus? Doesn't deserve the FF name. FFX-2 was a good game, but not as good as FFX IMO and certainly wasn't as enthralling a story. So even though if they made an FFVII remake or Chrono Trigger remake or whatever, I would be all over it, I think it'd be a bit of a disappointment because nostalgia only goes so far.
