Hi,

I have had Spywareblaster since my first computer.....retained it always and still do. Free version I update manually as I just now did.

I run Norton IS which I adore, have free versions of both MBAM and Superantispy, since free, neither runs in real time, I just update them and use them to scan occasionally, they never find anything now.

Is there any point in retaining Spywareblaster?

Thanks!

I guess the question I would have to ask is "Does it ever catch anything?"

Well, Spywareblaster is unique in that preludes things invisibly and reports nothing. It has no scan options.

Just not sure if, right now, I am the only human on the planet still running it.:\

I think since I've always had it...I am afraid to not have it.

Truth is, I have never been clear on if it is doing much, very mysterious.:sneaky:
It's an app u just gotta take on faith. Or not.

It doesn't touch your hosts file.It puts kill bits in the registry against known domains and so forth which are a viral risk. This helps prevent viruses
running should they arrive.
It is a darned good program to have onboard because it stops many viruses etc "before" they act. Protection is better than cure.
There is no scan or use of resources, you just get the updates from time to time then "enable all protection". It is similar to SpyBot Immunize feature.

Edit:
SpyBot does indeed have a Hosts file feature.
SpyBot also has an "Immunize" feature which works in exactly the same way as SpywareBlaster (kill bits in the registry).
There is a fair element of overlap between what the two features achieve, so it's easy to get them mixed up.

nothing wrong with using SpywareBlaster.

it helps harden your system and helps protects your browsers.

if you are using MBAM then you should consider MBAR.

Hey!

Every coupla years I go thru a little phase where I am like "Why do I still have this thing?' Now, finally, having learned what I have, I think that is over!

Now I will find out what this MBAR is!

Truth is....and I have always taken this for granted, it's why I committed to learn to stay safe early on--- I have never had a real infection. Little trojans twice, got rid of them, but that's it. With this installasion of W7 64, and Pal Moon as my default browser, Superanti don even find tracking cookies as it always did....however few.

I luv Superanti.....always paid for it, but this time, I got tired of paying for things and so, run the free version. I esp love the engine, cause it scans things simultaneously at warpspeed.

Edit: K, just learned the MBAR addresses rootkits. Creepiest word in the English language. (Cept for Dust Mites.) I will get it immediately.

New app is running! It is a BETA build; I luv it already, thanks! (Wow, this is taking long time this scan)

it does take time but it has found stuff others didn't.

you might want to check out this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows/security/

Thanks. I am good at testing apps and never decide which to keep vs which to dump arbitrarily. so, my armamentarium of protection apps, which evolves over time (apps change build by build), right now could not be better. I am also grateful for the addition of the anti rootkit app.....tho it din find anything, I will keep it forever.

My issue in posting, was to solicit info re the viability of Spywareblaster.....and, given the input, I am now clear on that I should keep it!():)

I stopped using Spyware Blaster and Spybot years ago. I would just purchase the license for MBAM and take advantage of the active protection, it works well for me. Only $25 for a lifetime license, and it is often on sale for $15.

I too have always run MBAM (also Suuperanti.).....but, in this relatively new setup, I have free versions of both, as I no longer need real time protection.

My Norton IS truly does it all. I came to that from the usual observation over time, nothing theoretical.

But Spywareblaster truly does innoculate the registry in unique ways......as I have learned in this thread. And that is why I plan to keep it.
