nice phone. really nice phone actually. if i wouldnt get slaughtered in mobile-to-mobile minutes and sprint gave a discount to my job id switch over. very nice and until verizon rolls out lte phones ill be extremely envious of you sprint users.

What do you mean? Calls are free to any mobile number with with any carrier on Sprint's anymobile plans. mobile-to-landline not so much though...and there's no "5 favs/circle-o-friends/whatever" option.

But yeah, I'm on Sprint because of the work discount. Actually very decent coverage in my area though. I've been happy with them.

Sprint = Verizon for voice coverage. My Sprint phone just roams on Verizon any time I'm in the middle of nowhere (Verizon tends to get coverage just fine).

Yeah, that's what I've discovered. It's also why I have to throw my pre into roaming-only at work, in the basement. Otherwise it'll fight between sprint digital and verizon roaming all day, and kill the battery. Sprint's signal is just too weak to be used, but just strong enough to be a headache.

Yup, "minutes" is no longer a problem with Sprint. It's near unlimited.

Its pretty beefy. Basically the HD2 with Android 2.1/Sense, 4G, a better camera, and a front facing camera. Interesting note, it has slightly less RAM (512 vs 576) than the T-Mobile HD2. Big win for Sprint. Especially since they've already got a blossoming WiMax network with Clearwire.

SO my plan is up at the end of the month and I am eligible for upgrades. Looks like I will be waiting for this phone to get some reviews before I jump ship to Verizon with a Droid or Nexus One.

However, that doesn't mean I will not be calling retentions and threatening to jump ship and get $10 off my plan.

2) Will Sprint sell the Evo to customers who live outside of Sprint's 4g coverage area?

I don't know why people always ask for the latest phones on SERO. If you want the latest phones get on a new plan. If price is more important to you then stay on SERO. You can't have it all and everyone knows the best phones won't be on SERO.


All Sprint needs to do is launch 4G in LA area and I'm set. I want a better release date then just summer cus I've been itching to get a new phone right now. Ugg I guess I'm going to have to wait until summer then.

However since 4G is apparently going to be rolled out in Denver at some point, depending on performance, I may just abandon Comcast altogether if I can use the Sprint 4G/WiMax subscription with my home network...especially with the work discount.

Anyone know how the WiMax performance is for gaming, Netflix streaming, etc...?

Correct, Sprint will not be releasing any new high end phones and smartphones for SERO. The best you can get is a Blackberry like I have on SERO.

Gaming relies on latency rather than bandwidth - WiFi barely suffices, so I wouldn't count on WiMax.

Yea the latency would suck for FPS games. For MMO's it should be fine.

Our biggest questions at this point are availability and pricing. Sprint is keeping mum, just stating a "Summer" availability, and interestingly clarified that not only is it not announcing device pricing, but it's not announcing plan pricing yet either -- sounds like a 4G-on-a-phone surcharge could be somewhere in our future.

So it looks like they might charge more for 4G but seeing as Sprint is the cheapest in the game, it'd still be cheaper then everyone else. I can't see them charging more than $10 on top of their existing plans for 4G. We do know they are hurting for customers so I'm sure they won't charge a lot for it.

The handset runs a combo of EV-DO Rev. A and WiMAX, with calls still being made over CDMA and the EV-DO / WiMAX options for data. Interestingly, it sounds like concurrent data and voice use might be possible for the first time on CDMA carrier in this way (killing AT&T's well-advertised differentiator), though Sprint says that's still in the testing phase. One other new feature is the Sprint hotspot app, another MiFi-style connection sharing number, which is obviously aided greatly by the WiMAX on board and can support up to eight concurrent users.

Just check their map on their site for coverage. Sprint has better coverage than AT&T so unless you literally live in the middle of no where, you should have 3G coverage where you live. Even if you don't have 4G, this is still going to be an awesome phone. There's no 4G here in Los Angeles and I still want this phone bad.

Supposedly the pricing is going to be $449 minus the $150 new number/2 year upgrade minus $100 mail in rebate = $199.

There is also supposedly not going to be an extra charge for using 4g as long as you are on an everything data plan. This phone will not be activated on SERO.

It has evdo and wimax radio so it will work even if 4g isn't available.

3G here pretty much everywhere in Boston and Greater Boston area. I will not get 3G in residential areas way out however, but 3G in all major highways and stuff.

That's how network buildouts work, new towers target highways and high traffic areas, along with high business and large residential clusters.
