i currently have a samsung 8500 and it's just horrid. i was thinking of getting a new phone, in flip style, and i was wondering what phones are the best. i only need to use the phone for making calls, none of that fancy wireless web, or visino stuff, any suggestions? i was thinking sanyo 5000 or 5150 are both of these phones 3G compatible?

Thanks!

You didn't like your Samsung 8500? I think it was a better phone that my N400 I just bought. My N400 is constantly dropping calls and getting crappy signal in comparison.

well, i've had this phone for more than a year now, and i can't make calls from home and i get a significant amount of dropped calls, and if i don't, the signal is very choppy. i'd say the amount of calls i've had that went all the way through was around 20...haha. but yea, i don't know if i should get the sanyo 5000, 5150 or something else.

The 5150 is 3G voice compatible. It does not have high speed data, cannot download games and ringers and such off the web, tho you can get ringers and pictures on it via serial cable. Uhm, your best bets for a 3G phone that does both are either the Hitachi P300 or Sanyo 4900 if you like a candybar style phone and the Sanyo 5300 if you like a flip. The A500 is a decent but most people think its overrated, at least according to a lot of people. The LG5350 is a mess, its only strongpoint is 3.5megs for downloads and stuff.

Uhm, that's about it. I can answer whatever other questions you have for the most part

I have a Sanyo 5300 BTW. Great phone.

NutBucket, how much did oyu pay for the Sanyo 5300 ?

I want to get one of those, but heard they're expensive.

I might pick up an a500 for $200 pricematching Costco..
How is it overrated, by the way ?

Also, I have a Samsung 8500 now I think its a great phone .. just want to take advantage of the new Sprint features
(PCSvison) .. plus a color display is always nice for flossin ;)

I ended up paying $250 for the 5300. The instore price is $399. There was or is a $50 rebate, even for existing customers. I called up and got myself a $100 equipment credit from Sprint.

A500 is overrated b/c the screen really isn't that great IMHO. Actually, from what I've seen the P300 and 5300 have the best screens. Maybe overrated isn't right word. Its more like overpriced. $200 is about right for the phone I guess but it certainly isn't worth the $300 they were first selling it for. I nearly bought one at that price until I learned about the 5300. I have never really played with a A500 but from what everyone says that has used both the 5300 just blows it away. Its a bit large for being a modern phone, the 5300 but its an easy size to use. I'm still waiting for the leather cases to come in. I managed to snag a holster for it already.

so for basic voice, what phones would you recommend? i don't need wireless web and vision at all, as i am thinking of going to t-mobile when my contract expires (in may).

Thanks!

The Sanyo 4900 has probably the best reception out of all available phones...and it's pretty cheap. Or, you could try to find a LG 5250 or get the 5350.

Sanyo 5150. Excellent phone. Can be had for about $100-$150 I believe. Or you could go with the Sanyo 4700. Can ya tell I like Sanyos? I would say get a Motorola but those aren't due out until next year sometime. Also, why not call retention and see if they won't just give you a new phone, or at least a phone credit. You have a fairly old phone so you might end up with a free N400 or Sanyo 4900. No harm in trying since you are actually thinking of switching over to T-Mobile.
