Luckily I live in KC, so routing to a point 10 miles away should not be a problem :) ... 20ms pings here I come. Not to mention that there are about 30,000 Sprint employees within a 50 mile radius, so hopefully installation should be speedy enough. Thanks for the info Oligail - hope your latency improves. I just realized that at 630kb/s, you could dl a divx encoded dvd in like 20 minutes. Heck, you could probably stream an actual DVD in real time depending on the compression. (7gigs / 630k/s /60s = 185 minutes) ... not that you would actually find anyone who could match your speed on the other end (unless apple decides to open a my.mp3.com type service with DVD's... now wouldn't that be something).

zhensel,

I live in KC as well... I'm thinking bout getting this xt2 service when my contract with swbell ends in march. I've been dying to go for faster speed... Swbell sucks for my upstream though.

Hmmm... maybe I'll give them a call and tell them i want my upload cap lifted or i'm leaving in march. Good idea.

Anyway, let me know how it goes. I'm about 6,000 feet from the Tel. Co switch, so i'd get sweet speeds.

Email me with how it goes, tgilitzr@swbell.net

tgillitzr - I actually live in Overland Park and didn't even have broadband capability until now (odd, since I'd wager that about 1/4 of the people here would probably shell out for broadband access). I'm probably only going to get the direct service. That'd be pretty sweet if swbell lifted your cap since there'd be no one else to steal your bandwidth. Have you looked into any of the other local dsl providers? Grapevine, etc?

Question: Does adsl service take up an entire voice line? Will I still need my two lines from swbell?

Nope, you can still use your line while your using your dsl modem, you just need to install filters to all your phones (and let the unfiltered signal go to your modem).

Oligail:

<< I have infact seen downloads speeds that are very high, sometimes as high as 630kbps >>

I take it that is 630 kilo-bytes(not bits) per sec.? (usually they would differentiate 630kbps vs. 630 KBps) let's see that's roughly 5000 kbps or 5Mbps. How sweet it is... download 5 meg files in 8 sec...

Unfortunately it's not available in my area yet.

Oh, i guess you've already tweaked your RWin, etc.?

To answer your question for him. Very, very sweet... especially when available for 119 a month.

Does anyone else notice how horrible Sprint's Ion site is? Not in content, but design. DHTML scrolling windows are so 1999. Seriously, I have to expand the window well past 800x600 in order for the scroll buttons to even be visible. I'd wager that more than a few customers have turned away from this page confused and gone to other broadband options. Damn you t3 media (now razorfish) and your introduction of self-scrolling pages to the world!

I do think that guy on the xt2 page is pretty cool though... Fat and proud of it!

I think I might go for the xt2 service now... too bad Sprint doesn't have a discount for existing PCS customers.

I long for the Sprint ION option. Those morons (follow me here) keep sending me literature, making me salivate for the day that I can drop Time Warner. I get about a pamphlet a month from them. You know what I'm talking about...join Sprint ION now and SAVE! Every d@mn time I call them, I get the same answer...not in your area and we do not know when it will be.
I live up north, just outside of Liberty, just inside KC. Fricking idiots.....next time I get one of those flyers, I should call them and inquire again. After that, tell them that they might be able to generate more sales/flyer if they only sent them to people who can ACTUALLY use their product.

Sorry everyone....had to let loose a little bit. TW Road Runner service can be quite annoying, though I'm just glad that I don't have SWB's DSL......

I know what you're saying. I got a bunch of flyers too, then signed up on their website to be notified when it was available. You know what, I have no idea when it became available, but they never notified me :)

I've been on Ion for 45 days in Seattle... what I'll say is the latency out of Seattle sucks big time. 100ms as everything goes to Kansas City. Kansas City customers report no such latency... but users in LAX have reported it too... hopefully if sprint gets enough complaints they will improve the network routing.

I'm organizing a web site for customers http://www.ionusers.com/ -- but nothing up there yet. webmaster@ionusers.com if you are a customer or have signed-up and want to network.

Well I signed up for Sprint ION last week and live in WestLA area. They already set-up my Earthlink account but was told that it will take about 6 weeks to have someone install it. They don't seem to have a self install kit, like many other companies do. I'll have to wait a little longer... I tell you after having @home, it's hard to go back to 56K, but @home is so rediculously expensive in my area. And $10 dollars a month for that crappy Surfboard cable modem is suck, but they never asked for it back. I guess I made up for it when I cancelled and it took them about 6 months before they cut the service off, though.
Oh, why do they have to be associated with Earthlink of all places, oh well, I guess I'll have to live with that...

GetInMyFatBelly: They don't have much of a self-install program with DSL since they have to coordinate your service with the local phone company and a few other entities. The phone companies stall as much as possible before they do the installation because they would rather you sign up for the phone company's dsl service. Due to the anti-trust deal they have to let you use the line with a 3rd party (sprint), but they really push it as far as installation time goes - trying to make you say, "6 weeks is too long. I'll sign up with SWBELL and get it in a week."

That makes sence, but Verizon DSL at $5 less isn't as good as SprintION with static IP and higher speeds, I'll wait...
