Oh, and depending on your phone you can get itnernational coverage as well. I know my Q works in europe (gprs)...probably costs a fistful per minute though...through Vodaphone iirc
WTF? Uh, no.

Motorola may release GSM version that has GPRS, but you are right -- his CDMA phone doesn't have gprs and doesn't work in Europe.

I says gprs in one of the menus and a cient of mine told me that it should work.

Is it a GSM or CDMA Motorola Q? Are you sure that it is GPRS and not GPS 🙂

If it is the GSM version, it makes sense, but checking a couple of websites, it seems that the GSM version is not released yet.

If it is CDMA and has GPRS, it is strange, because GPRS is a GSM technology. Also, according to the Motorola website for the CDMA version:
Bands: Dual-band 800 and 1900 CDMA 1x-EVDO/aGPS
Not only it doesn't mention GPRS, but also the frequencies that it lists -- 800 (850) and 1900 are not used in Europe; they use 900 and 1800 MHz there.

You may find an accidental referrence to GPRS because windows mobile supports it, and someone at moto may have forgotten to delete that menu. The Q definately won't be able to catch a GPRS signal as that needs a GSM network.

This is the only CDMA/GSM WinMo phone I know about (and I want one!).

I've been fighting with my Cincular Edge for the last week or so, it sucks. My company is going to get me an EV-Do to try for a week and see if it is better. Even with a strong signal in a metro location, I was getting VERY poor throughput like less than a 56k modem.

Verizon FTW. I pay $40/month for coverage nearly everywhere in the USA at great speeds. If u live in a Cingular area where their is HSDPA coverage I'd probably go with it, it's got better speeds than Verizon.

Are you kidding me?

I hit ~560/210 at 12 bucks a month unlimited. If you want to toss a crap-ton of money out the window, go Verizon. If you want awesome spead and low cost, go Sprint.

How do you get unlimited data for $12

I just got home from cell phone shopping and Sprint said $60/mo. for unlimited. $40 for limited.

sprint has a SERO plan for 30$ for unlimited data and 500 minutes and other deals.

Sprint SERO

it's in the hot deals forums for SD and here on the hot deals forums.

Only problem is getting unlimited text messaging... 🙁

how is sprint customer service? i have had ok with cingular so i will be keepng my cell phones through them, but since the price is the same, the cards are the same i may as well go with the sprint for the better coverage.

i just need to make sure sprint has a 30day trial period that in case i am not happy with it i can return it.

Sprint has a 30 day trial period. 15 for the phone though.

Customer service is hit or miss, the ones I dealt with ranged from dumb as bricks to ok...

The plan says "unlimited instant messages" but they charge .10 / for any IM reply...

i will be getting the pc card, not a phone if that makes any difference.

I guess what you're talking about is the option during checkout that says "FREE! Unlimited Web, Data and Picture Mail."

That would give me unlimited web access using my laptop if I choose a bluetooth enabled phone like the Sanyo Katana?

I think the main issue between Sprint and Verizon's EV-DO service is that while Verion already has a steady Subscriber base for that service, Sprint does not; not to the level that Verizon has anyways.

What this results in is in VERY VERY STRICT usage rules on Verizon's network versus VERY VERY lax usage rules on Sprint Network. Basically, more than 5-10GB of usage month on Verizon's network and they will terminate your contract. That said, it is easy to see why.

In addition, all of Sprint's radio towers are appearantly 1900mhz, which allows for more EV-DO bandwidth per tower vs Verion's mixed 800mhz/1900mhz towers which, while supproting EV-DO, are geared for lower-bandwidth 800mhz service, and Verizon watches their QoS very carefully, hence the strict AUP. That said, in a conversation with a Phd in EE, I was told that was nonsense and that Verizon, like any other carrier, can't handle everyone d/l'ing to their hearts content without having it affect service quality. Basically, Sprint is being lax simply ebcause they don't want to alienate new customers, but once they form a nice and juicy EV-DO subscriber base, the hammer will come down.

Regardlesso fall of this, it has been proven through testing, on howard and evdo forums, that if you are in their respective ev-do zone, sprint will give you, albeit neglible, superior speeds.

went yesterday to pick up a sprint ev-do rev a card. turning out to be a nightmare. was on tech support for over an hour, although the people were nice, i only connect about 10% of the time when i want to connect, and only @ ~15KB/s.....and i have a ev-do tower less than a 100yds from my condo when i was at the sprint store they brought it up and showed its avg of ~40KB/s.

i got transfered up to "advanced tech" and worked with them for at least 30mins and they told me that since the pc card i got was so new, they hadn't worked out the bugs. so, i might return this and either get a different card if i can find one, try verizon or cingular 🙁

I have edge on my cell I did a speed test and I got about 80Kb/s down and 45kb/s UP using blue tooth link with my laptop.

wow 45kb up is impressive.

With my verizon phoen I get about 200kbps up, and 400kbps average.

With my friends Sprint Evdo phone + bluetooth teethering setup, he was averaging about 550kbps down and 200kbps up.

thanks man for showing me how slow cingular is 🙁 🙁

wait a second, this thread inspired me to finally hook up my LG CU500 via bluetooth..I am near downtown Atlanta, and I just got exactly 550 down, 347 up on the speakeasy test

this on the 3G HSPDA of course..3G is in the cities that I frequent, with the exception of College Station (I would guess it would be there relatively soon, given its small size and proximity to Houston), so I'm happy 🙂

could you explain how you are doing this? i have a pda phone and am assuming i could put a data plan on the phone for ~$45/mo unlimited. then pick up a bt adapter for the laptop or possibly use the cradle? do only certain phones support edge?

I have Bluetooth built into my laptop..the settings are mostly online on Cingular's own webpage on how to set it up (obviously varies greatly by phone), although you may have to use wap.cingular instead of isp.cingular..search around and you can find it. Certain phones support EDGE, and certain phones have EDGE+HSPDA WCDMA (3G) -- that is what I have..

after hours on tech support i am getting sustained ~8KB/s with a burst to 16KB/s, that is it, and i am less than 100yds from a ev-do tower 🙁

looks like i will be getting an edge card soon 🙁
