Sprint DSL or cable??

aircooled

Lifer
Well broadband is finally in my neighborhood. Roadrunner cable or Sprint DSL.

I am leaning toward Sprint DSL (as it is $10 per month cheaper).
Anyone have any experience with sprint DSL?

Thanks!

I have Mindspring DSL and I really like it. I reach 150kbps constantly and there are rarely any down times. Down times really annoy me, but they're probably being caused by the lack of power we're having here in California.

i have rogers@home and it's possibly the WORST isp i've had yet...seriously.

yeah, i get low pign during gaming, but when there's intermittent cut-outs every minute, it's pretty useless...

not to mention numerous occassional mail server outages, etc...

i would get DSL, but can't afford the cable modem, plus it's a couple dollars MORE expensive than cable modem...

the only thingi enjoy about cable modem over dsl is when i get 350kb/sec downloads and such.

otherwise, i'd probably go w/ dick sucking lips over cable...consider tho, cable, even at peak usage, is probably NEVER slower than the fastest adicksuckinglips connection...and who cares about "privacy"..i'm sure people are eager to hack into your little worthless computer w/ absolutely nothing of real interest...(or am i speaking for mysefl?)

If you want speed definitely get cable. You also don't have to wait weeks to get the service hooked up. Also for me anyways I never have downtimes.

I have cable - RR. But would get a DSL if I had the choice.
Cable is more reliable - I hear people say, I don't know, my cable connection is always up - no disruptions of service yet !
But cable is more expensive - if you don't have atleast Basic service - they charge you for it.
In my case - Basic ~$9 plus RR $54 = ~$65 a month.
That's the cheapest combination of their service available.
I think I could get DSL for $20 less.

I wouldn't even consider DSL for a couple of reasons
1.) Speed varies depending on wiring and distant from router
2.) Cable modem is faster! 1.5 Megabits/sec. vs about 400 Kb/sec
3.) Most DSL deals give you a two hour window to be online then cut you off and put you on a waiting list to get reconnected.

If you have cable, it is around $40 a month, and $50 without cable, which is worth every penny. I never have experienced down times and with my company, the speed is not dependent on the number of users. (I have AT&T broadband, which is the same as RR). It is kind of myth that cable gets slower with more users because your speed is regulated by the company, not by the number of connections. It may have been different with one-way cable access. I have had cable for over a year now and it is fantastic! You will probably get a free cable modem and installation, so you can't go wrong!

Do you have to have cable from the same company as the cable (modem) company to get the cheaper deal? I was thinking about @home cable, but I use Comcast for regular cable...

Uhhh, if you have extra money you might want to consider Sprint ION (DSL)! If it is available in your area you can get 8Mbps down and 1Mbps up! 🙂 At least that is what I'm getting in about a month or two when it becomes available in my area. 😉

My @Home cable absolutely flies. From a good server I can maintain a steady 400KB/sec or about 3mbps. I get very low ping times which makes it great for multiplayer gaming. The only I don't like the the slower upload speeds. @Home recently capped the uploads at 128kbps which is still pretty fast. I guess i'm so used to the download speeds, I get frustrated with the upload speeds. Hope this helps

<< 2.) Cable modem is faster! 1.5 Megabits/sec. vs about 400 Kb/sec >>

My DSL is 1.5 down and 750 up. You can get it even faster. A 400K/sec cable line is only going to be as fast as its choke point on the net.

I have never heard of this. I am not saying its not possible anywhere, but like I said this is a first to me.

DSL - Super reliable dedicated bandwidth. Usually pretty damn fast.

Cable - Can be faster. generally speaking not as reliable. Your bandwidth is not nearly as stable as you are at the mercy of their network load.

If you are close enough to the telco swithing office to get a good connection, its a no brainer, DSL. However, if you are to far away to get a "good" speed, the choice isn't so clear.

i've had roadrunner and thought it was great, but then again if you have a lot of people connecte in your neighborhood then it does get slow if they are all on. like on weekends it seemed to take forever..

DSL is a good choice. not as fast but hey, i've got it right now and get on average 500k (mileage will vary of course)

basically, whatever gives you the best deal, least commitment time. go with that

I'm starting to think that whole thing about if you have cable then you will get slow down at peak times because of the number of people on your node is bogus. I have never experienced ANY slow down with my cable service and I live in a pretty populated area too. (Southwest suburbs of Chicago)

I don't have any slow-downs with my cable either. That is just something the phone company throws out to try and keep people from getting cable. I'm sure it could if the node had over 500 people on it. Here I don't think I would ever experiance any real slowdown because they won't allow more then 250 people on a node.

Cable spanks DSL.

Cable is way faster. They have less problems.

Verizon is getting sued for $43+ million for their shi t t y service with DSL customers.

Don't believe the stories on companies DSL pages that CABLE people will get slowed down when more people are online in their neighborhood.

It's all bull. Cable companies install more nodes and splitters as more users sign up and your service speed will always be fast even if more people on your block get cable too.

Its about smae $$ in some areas its even cheaper then DSL.

Bad thing is you have to lease or buy the modem, they can be expensive unless your cable company has some kind of a deal going.

I've had Pacbell DSL in the past. I had it for about a year and it was pretty reliable. I would get fairly consistent download speads..approx 100kbps to 150kbps on a good server. But there were occasions when my dsl connection would be down completely. usually on weekends. REally sucked! It only happened a few times. When I moved I switched to comcast@home here in NoCal. I cannot believe the download speeds I get. I usually get 200-250kbps and up to 450kbps on a good day! Awesome compared to PacBell DSL. Although, my cable connection(speed) does fluctuate often but not much. I don't feel as safe on cable as I did on DSL(security reasons) but I prefer cable because of the awesome speeds. my 2 cents.

Zero

fitzhue, the cost should be around $120/m. Now I'm sure your saying, "DAMN, THAT IS ALOT OF MONEY FOR DSL!" Well, actually it is not. When you sign up for Sprint ION you get 2 phones lines, Sprint becomes your local phone service provider and you get 400mins of long distance. All this is about equals to what I'm paying now for my 1.5Mbps down, 128Kbps up DSL connection and phone service. I might opt for the 4 phone line solution though. 😉 Here are the
price listings. 🙂 Once I get it I'll let you know how it is. See you on the UT servers with my 10-15 ping. 😉

get cable. I have twc/nyc RR and love it. Sure, now and then it slows a bit but most of time it's lightning. if you don't like it they give refund first mo.

The only way you can tell if you have a chance of getting good broadband service is by checking with people in your area whom have to service which you're interested in. Many people have had good experience with DSL, bad with cable, and vice versa.

JackBurton, that service looks incredibly sweet. I'm gonna see what the difference in price would be for cable and seriously consider that. Thanks a lot! 😀
