Sprint Cell Phone Service

Peeps, need an opinion...

My company offers a pretty sweet deal on Sprint wireless service:

20% off the $49.99 for 450 peak mins and 2500 night/weekends AND National Long Distance plan

I want to get this with a new Timeport P8767...whatever it is (the 3-color display one). They also give us $90 the price of the phone that costs $199 w/ a new service.

So, with my discounts, I can get that good service plan for about $39 plus a new Timeport for about $109

My question is, I know Sprint kind of sucks, but with all these discount options.... should I deal with it?

It is the cheapest service, but the service is suck.

I have too many friends who hate it and complain about always being dropped.

I have also read too many war stories about their coustomer service to want to bother with them. I say stick with verizon.

In this section of the country (Midwest), verizon absolutely blows goats. Sprint PCS rarely if ever drops calls here.

Funny how the exact opposite can be found depending on where you live.

I'm located in Boston, but as a consultant, I travel the country.... so a national plan is important.

sooo...... overall, i don't think i can pass up how cheap it is combined with the exact phone i want

Is it really that bad in the East?

I have three Sprint phones and their service is not perfect, but I'm very satisfied.

I live in a fringe service area as well and have very few dropped connections at home or wherever I go.

Before jumping on the plan offered by your company look at the other plans they offer. For instance, I live in the St. Louis Missouri area and I bought 2 of the 3 phones at the local Best Buy....after their rebates and gift certificates, the phones were free.

It sounds like a great deal, just compare.

I live in Boston and a sprint customer, they rarely drop my calls when I'm in boston area, but when I'm at work (Andover area) I can barely get any signals.

Sprint customer service is suck! I tried not to deal with them if I don't have to, and their billing system..OMG, I got overcharged so many times, and had to go thru war with the billing department.
I'm thinking about switching to Verizon or cingular, but I still have a few months left in my contract. I suggest avoid Sprint PCS.

Do not rely solely on the coverage maps. I lived in an area that appeared covered on the map, but I did not get a strong enough signal to make a call while outside of my house. I called CS and they said that I had a tower 1.3miles and another 1.8 miles away from my house. They blamed the loss of signal on a tower being down, but when they said that they had fixed the tower, I still had no signal. I decided to cancel and was successful. I only got charged about $1.80 for the calls I made and that were subsequently dropped and didn't have to pay the activation fee or any cancellation fees. It was hard to get that though. I was on the phone with CS for about an hour and managed to reduce the charges from $70 (first month and activation) to $35(activation). Then I got the local Sprint store to drop the activation fee by making another phone call. I went to return the phone and there were 5 other people in line and they were all returning their phones and one person looking to buy one.

Sprint will not guarantee their service, so if your phone doesn't work in your house or your business then you may have to pay alot to get out of the contract. I got lucky, but others may not be as fortunate. I would recommend that you find someone who has a phone and try it where you are going to primarily use it. If it doesn't work there then don't get one, but if it does then try one out.

sprint works just fine for me here in west lafayette, i did run into the problem of it not working so well by the michigan/indiana border, but here at school it works just fine. i find it much better than any other service available here.

Sprint works pretty good here in NJ. I recently drove from NJ to Florida and I must say I was impressed with the coverage. I like have the flexibility to use the phone wherever sprint has a network. The other providers will charge you roaming if you go outside your home area, although Verizon has a very big home area(north east plan)

Works great in San Antonio and Dallas/Ft Worth Texas. Occasional drops while inside my apartment in Ft Worth though. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied.

check out the map on that link to see the coverage area of sprint. I live in virginia and get great coverage, and have been pretty pleased with the service.

edit: that timeport is a sweet phone.. i would have gotten it if it wasnt for the 200 dollar pricetag. I went with the touchpoint1100 instead... which is still a nice phone.

I have sprint PCS and it really sucks in Chicago, I cannot hold conversations for more than 10 minutes at a time.
And this is the experience for everyone in else in Chicago also.
I am locked into contract till January, but after that good bye to Sprint forever...

Can you say 'DROPPED'? Oh well...i could say...dropped call refund and i WILL call however many times it takes...i got a refund of almost $10 once...LOL...but each call will only give you $0.35 so i kept calling like a mofo. But sometimes they answer the phone instead...ha ha ha.

I used to travel for work as well and had sprint PCS. In most major cities you won't have many dropped calls. Service is cheap for no roaming charges and no long distance charges. Pretty decent phones as well (i had samsung 3500). Most of the ppl I hear complaining are usually at home or driving in residential areas. But in major cities and in their business areas, no problems. The only other service I can recommend is AT&T.

Well, I signed it.

But they do have a 30-day return policy, so if it totally sucks, i can cancel with no charges.

You hear a lot of people saying that but in my experience, (been with sprint for 4 years) it's not the case. Most people that say the service sucks are basing their opinions on previous experience from when they first started Sprint service about 4-5 years ago. I've had a cell phone for almost 12 years now (with 3 different carriers) and sprint has the best providers I've had. Yes they sucked when they first came to the bay area but since they've expanded coverage, I have better connections than my friends on verizon, att, cingular.

I'm pretty sure this depends on where you live, but in the bay area, it's pretty good service. I've had only about 4 dropped calls these last 2 years and get service where other people don't. I never get the "system busy" message as I know a lot of Cingular users get (Sis and Mom own cingular phones).

My point is, try the phone out in your area. It mainly depends on where you live and how developed Sprint service is in your area. You do have a 30 return policy, so you really have no worries if the service is bad.

like everyone has said. it all depends on the area...When i lived in Baltimore it was the best service coverage wise, but now i'm in LA and does not work in anyplace indoors, even though the "coverage map" looks the same for the 2 cities.

sprint is awesome in hawaii..

Rarely dropped calls.

And where i always am i always get recpetion..

THey have a return policy. so check that out. and if it doens't work well. i suggest returning it.

Btw, i like how you can check how many minutes you have left on your phone...
