Sprinklers

We have inground sprinklers, and I was wondering, what time is best for the grass? Morning, before the sun comes up or at night right after it goes down? We have about two trees in our yard, the rest just gets pounded with sun throughout the day during the summer, and drys out pretty quickly... If we run them during the day, they seem to have little to no effect.

Early morning or evening is fine.

Early morning is okay. Late afternoon/early evening is okay as long as the ground is dry by late evening. Mid-afternoon is bad, because the drops of water can act as lenses for the sunlight and burn your grass. Late evening is bad, because it will promote mold.

My sprinklers are set to come on at 4:30am and the final zone finishes up around 6:30am. There are three good reasons for doing it in the early morning: (1) It puts less strain on the city's water supply since most people are still in bed. (2) You don't have to worry about the grass not drying before nightfall (which can happen if the humidity is high). (3) The wind is usually calmer in the early morning. My drip zones are set to come on at 9:30am but that's okay since drip irrigation is a different ballgame from normal sprinklers.
