Yeah, i pretty much always shoot with the Polarizer in the middle of the day here.

Colors in the Park one are completely 'as shot', but i've messed with the colours a bit in the flower shot (and cropped it).

They're both marginally sharpened and brightened (just using the very basic stuff picture project allows).

Nice work, Dug. Your bright sun is like mine here in Arizona - a polarizer is sort of standard.

I like the flower - but why not crop it again, a vertical out of it and center the flower?

What lens did you do the flower with? How close were you?

Here's one I got in the front yard last week - the top of a small barrel cactus. They have succulent flowers that come in mid-summer.

Corkyg: how far away were you when you shot the photo? I have tried using my 70-300 IS USM as a macro lens, but I have to be so far away to get it to focus.

Like I said above - about 12 to 15 feet away. Sort of "across the driveway." The actual macro minimum focusing distance for that lens is 4.6 ft. I was about 3X that at 300mm. With an XTi, that would equate to 480mm.

A good technique is to use manual focus - set it at the minimum (macro) distance, and then focus with your feet.

Just taken with the D80 kit (18-135mm Nikkor), from a few feet away i guess...

That crop was my choice, here is the original shot (I just liked the bokeh on those pink flowers, and wanted to set the shot up as a desktop background, hence the flower on the right...):

For that usage (full desktop) it works as you have it. The bokeh effect makes it easy to see icons and titles - especially in Vista.

On the other hand, a lotof that is subjective - personal choice. I don't usually like full desktop imagery - I prefer a centered image with a black background. I arrange my icons around the perimeter in two columns - left and right. It makes them easier to see. I keep them all alphabetical after the 2 or 3 system icons.

Anyway, I would have turned the camera 90 degrees so that the vertical subject filled the vertical frame. A crop is only a post op fix. Would be something like this:

i like doug's crop. the middle of the flower is about at the intersection point of a third. and the left side is more interesting with the splash of color than the right side, and without being distracting.
