spread spectrum?

anyone have a link or quick explanation about what spread spectrum is? ive had the option to enable or disable it in the fsb section ever since my p3 550 system, but i have never known what it is

It has application mainly in communications. In computers it is popping up in things like wireless networking and Bluetooth. Here are the basics:

It supposedly reduces the interference your PC emits. I personally think it's BS, but hey, that's my opinion. :)

I read somewhere (Abit's old web site, maybe?) that the spread spectrum setting is only used for electro-magnetic interference certification, and they said you should always leave it disabled or risk instability.

It's different than what corky-g linked to. Well, the idea of spreading a signal across the frequency domain is similar but in this case it isn't used as a communications method, it's used to reduce the power output at any given frequency in order to meet some arcane FCC Class B certification rule. Or something like that.
