I read somewhere (Abit's old web site, maybe?) that the spread spectrum setting is only used for electro-magnetic interference certification, and they said you should always leave it disabled or risk instability.
It's different than what corky-g linked to. Well, the idea of spreading a signal across the frequency domain is similar but in this case it isn't used as a communications method, it's used to reduce the power output at any given frequency in order to meet some arcane FCC Class B certification rule. Or something like that.
