sprained ankle. what to do and not to do?

I sprained it yesterday playing basketball with some friends. I jumped. And I landed on somebody's foot (first time that's ever happened to me). Anyway it rolled. It's sprained. I went to the doctor's and they wrapped it up and gave me crutches (after an X-Ray). Told me to keep it up and get ice.

Anything else?

try staying off that foot as much as possible. depends how bad the sprain is. usually, my sprains from basketball arent that serious. i played a few games in the season with a freshly sprained ankle on a couple of occasions. definately try to rest it as much as possible though, try sleeping with it on a pillow. the less you use it, the faster it will heal.

might want to take a look at your basketball shoe if thats the reason you sprained it..

-put weight on it when you feel stable enough
-ice it if it swells
-take aspirin for the swelling and the pain
-keep pressure on it (keep it wrapped)
-keep it up (put pillows on it) it keeps the fluid from building up in your foot
-try not to walk on it the doctor gave you crutches, use them for as long as you can't walk on your own
-slowly put more weight on the ankle as it feels better

i think that's it, i was skating when i rolled my ankle really bad. i heard one of them loud pops, it was pretty dramatic, luckily i didn't break anything. 🙂 good luck on that ankle.

If you want to get back to playing basketball ASAP, unwrap it periodically and move it around if it doesn't hurt too much so your muscle and tendons don't tighten up... I had to have my knee in a splint type thing for about 10 weeks and when I took it off I couldn't walk... ya know how if your leg falls asleep and you try to walk you almost fall over? that's what this was like. Took about 8 weeks of physical therapy to get my leg back to normal strength.

stop being such a pussy. it's a sprain.

Uhh... I'm not. It's just I've never sprained an ankle before so I'm wondering what I should and should not do.... but you may carry on being an asshole if you like.

if its not a bad sprain just take some advil and do all your normal stuff. walking will hurt but the more you do it the better itll get

oh yes, one more thing. when you get better enough to be able to do some light exercise or walking on your feet, dont use any ankle braces or support of that sort. if you use it too much, it will become dependant on it, and your ankle will not strengthen up. ive had people on my team do this, and they are much much more prone to ankle sprains now. you want to rest it, but dont cheat it.

Keep it elevated, use ice (Ice for 15-20 minutes every hour if possible) and if the pain becomes too much, try some NSAIDS(Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like aspirin or ibprofin. Good luck. 🙂
