RSX? :Q I thought your Dad wanted a sports car, not a gay @ss, FWD piece of sh|t.

Look, be a smart kid, and listen to your pops.

Forums.Anandtech is not the place to ask for car opinions, considering the disproportionate number of rice boys here, who flood every single thread with "Blah, blah, blah, sucks man! I got me a Honda Civic! Yeah!" In the $25K price range, your best bet for a proper sports car, as opposed to some FWD Japanese family car with aggressive styling, is the Ford Mustang.

Yup, I agree with the Trans Am. But be aware, it is of cheap build quality and interior, like every other domestic.

ignore this fool. IIRC, he's the guy that started the, how can people find imports cool? thread.

some (most) of the best sports cars are imports. the Z, RX-7, Supra, just to name a few. they've been discontinued but are making a comeback.
i don't know about the mustant, but the Z and RX-8 are coming out in less than a year, so if he can wait, i suggest giving those a look.

and the NA 350Z is going to be under $30k weighing only 3,000 lbs.
if you want a good estimation of it's 0-60 time, the 3,200+ lb altima with a similar but more powerful engine does 0-60 in 5.9 secs (1/4 mile in 14.4 secs @ 100mph).
i think it'll hit mid 5's without breaking a sweat.

Nissan ~ Driven

EDIT:
Knightbreed -
those aren't rumors. i think they've pretty much been confirmed, regarding the RX-8 at least.

The Rex and Supra haven't been discontinued. They just haven't been exported to the States in a while. There have been rumours of both the Rex and Supra coming back to the US in 2003 or 04.

Edit: I suppose for all intents and purposes they have "discontinued" to Alienwho and his pop,

<< If he wants a car that goes fast from 0-60 in a straight line, tell him to get a Mustang/Camaro. If he wants a sporty car that actually has the handling to go with it, tell him to get a WRX. The WRX handles like a rally car, but can also have 4-second 0-60 times. >>

haha thats funny, and what does a rally car handle like? bone cruncing suspension? Or ultra soft with huge articulation? The only thing you can say about rally car handling is it hopefully suits the driving conditions they are in. Real rally cars 0-60 well under 3seconds 🙂

WRX is nice but it has a mind numbingly ugly interior, and most have ugly freakin wings on the back.

What about a Audi A4 1.8t? Chipped to about 225hp its not riced and will be about 6sec to 60.

go for a trans am or camaro SS(although it's $28k) because they are going away after the 2002 model 🙁

Maybe you could talk him into one of the new Jags. I think they have the Type S that's going for around $29k. That's a little over your budget, but the ladies seem to think those are pretty fly. They have pretty good pick up, but more than anything they have style.

Another one I'd suggest to him would be a Mazda Miata. It's the ultimate mid-aged crisis car. Convertible with good handling, rear-wheel drive, and plenty of pick up. I'm 6'4" and can squeeze into one. But I wouldn't suggest it if you're over 6'1" just because of comfort. Right now, also take into consideration all the deals you can get out there with financing and if this is just a fun-riding car and not a primary vehicle, I would suggest leasing to him as well. You might be able to get even a NICER car just because you wouldn't have to pay on it for the rest of your life. 😉

<< 0-60 second time is off the mark a bit, and I don't know if the cars are distributed in the US, but I recently took a ride in a MG ZT and jeez, it blew me away.
Here was a car company left for dead by BMW only a few years ago, and ah heck me if they don't produce one of the most subtle yet driveable 'sports saloons' on the market!

There are wings and grill intakes, but it's done more tastefully than a Japanese car. The interior would put any Jap car to shame - and oozes quality.

The really clever thing is that I can see it appealing to both young and old. MG deserve to success this time around...

Haha Americans only wish they had such great cars as the new MGs, Alfra Romeos, Peugeots, Seats, Renaults. That sad I recommend the RenaultSport Clio!

You're joking right? Renaults and Pugeuots are the most laughable, uninspired cars produced in the industrialized world. MGs and Alfa Romeos are marginally better, but they can't compete in the U.S. because they don't have European tariffs to protect them here. Seats I've never even heard of, but I imagine are equally mundane. The U.S. is the biggest market for automobiles on Earth, and we have the lowest tariffs. Anyone who makes a respectable automobile can and does compete here.

A guy who is interested in something like a mustang is going to want a riced out sentra? Come on, now.

In that price range a maxima or altima v6 would be good though not as "sporty" as the mustang.

Wow, some of you have very, very conservative perceptions of what constitutes a sports car. A Mustang? Please. A Trans-Am? Please. A Camaro? Please. Honda Prelude? Please!

Drive a real sports car and then try driving a Mustang.

"Get'em before it's too late. Last year of production."

<Gulp> Did I just hear right? I heard there was a rumor that they were going to quit making 'em, but I didn't know it would come to pass. WTF! Idiots! First they quit making police cruisers and nice big RWD Cadillacs, now this! GM has their head up their ass!

I'm also an old fogy that hates pseudo sports cars. A Camaro or Firebird is the real thing. A Mustang would suit me too, but all of them are a little small IMO. I'm still trying to figure out what the big deal is about 'handling'. Where in the hell do you guys drive that it even matters? Kind of like dissing SUVs because they never go off road. Like these FWD pseudo sports cars are in high speed rallies every weekend or something! I'll tell ya one thing that your dad's car WILL face everyday, and that's stop lights with these FWD boy racers wanting to have a go at every one. What good will 'handling' do then? I'd rather have V8 torque, and if what fastz28 says is true, I'd grab one NOW! :Q

lol

Here's the scoop:

Acura RSX - fast engine if you enjoy high revving it, good reliability, good interior, much heavier, and softer suspension than the Integra

Nissan - some of the best engines in the world, but commonplace appearance

Honda Civic - sheep

Camaro/Firebird/Mustang - gobs of power, rwd(good), heavy, bad handling, bad interior

VW GTI - my choice, turbo or V6, becoming heavier and softer suspended as well but still fun

Don't say anything bad about the Renault Clio. Imagine a GTI or Civic but instead of a backseat is a V6 engine.
Renault Clio V6

Honestly, what Descartes says is true. These aren't really 'Sports Cars', but I know what your dad is after. I've never driven one of these little screamers, but I think I know what they're like. I was talking to some friends the other day about how I usually would just wind my GTO out in first gear up to 45MPH or so, then just drop it in fourth. He said that's not really doable with these new FWD buzz boxes. Screw that, I want REAL power and don't give a flying fvck if it can't corner at 1G. I want a V8, RWD and full frame. Is that too much to ask? Apparently it is for GM! :frown:

<< As much as I like the IDEA of the Impreza WRX in that its fast, has great handling, decent interior, rally inspired, boxer engine...I just can't ignore the fact that it's an ugly car. Take a look at some pics >>

I know what you mean....

"Buzz boxes" can have real power; it's just executed in a different way. 0-60 in 6 seconds is 0-60 in 6 seconds regardless of how you get there.

so your dad needs a mid life crisis mobile?

I never understood that. He's getting older, why not enjoy a luxury car? Hell, when i'm fifty, i dont want to have to feel every bump in the road.

He could wait for the Cadillac CTS, though. Very nice car, which will be out next year.

Why is the WRX considered rice?

Because it was designed to be, structurally, much better than it's predecessor?

Because it was designed to handle extreme acceleration?

Because it was designed to be a natural at the track?

Because it was designed to take abuse (WRC)

Because it considers performance before interior and exterior styling?

Because, stock, it is nearly as fast off the line as a S4?

Because stock it makes you realize that for the price, it is much more feasible than buying a civic and modding it on your own to go fast?

This car isn't rice. It's AWD, has 227HP from the factory, brakes that let it stop quicker than a camaro, and is as surefooted as any sports car? Just because it's fugly, doesn't mean it's rice.

Sigh🙁
