Woah...you seem like a really fun guy. You know...this may be a shock, but some people live in areas where they CAN use the speed and performance without run in with the law. Again, just because it's seems silly to you that doesn't make it the case for everyone else. Traffic laws and enforcement vary as well.
I've broken more traffic laws than anybody short of God could count. And no NOBODY can use the speed and performance of a sports car legally on public roads. Just because you probably aren't getting caught by a cop doesn't mean it's any less illegal, and it won't help when you careen into somebody at 120 mph and spend the next 6 years rotting in a jail cell.

Indeed, if most people used their sports cars to their potentials we'd have a catastrophic rash of traffic accidents. Most people in their sports cars drive barely faster than a mother in her volvo station wagon.

It's silly, in my opinion. I'm not stating it as an undeniable fact, but really other than having a car with decent power (for overtaking), anything else on that certainly does seem to cater toward's a fantasy that people can never even engage in.

See, there is your problem. Who says they can "never engage in it". Sure, if you are stupid and drive recklessly when the situation doesn't warrant it, you might get in trouble, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

Case in point, I have a loud, fast modified Mustang, and because I go to work at 11pm, I usually drive 90-95MPF on the freeway since there is almost no traffic. I'm not being reckless, and I haven't been tagged for it. There are other benefits if you are the type who enjoys power and speed, but if it's not your thing, you will never understand.

This is the dumbest thread ever.

For me, I buy fun cars and mess with them because it's a hobby.

Does the image appeal to you obviously no. Do I personaly thing the car improvements are "silly" yes, but would I still love to own an M3 you bet I would. The fact is if you have the money and will gain joy and satisfaction from it why the hell not. Yes its wastefull, yes there are better uses for the money, but at that point I dont care.
Yeah the image definitely appeals. Hell, I drive an iteration of one of the original sports sedans :D. I just hate that my desires are based on something I couldn't even really express in reality if the car I wanted was in my driveway.

6 years in jail for 120MPH? WTF are you smoking? You do realize traffic laws vary from state to state, and even town to town. I got pulled ove once for doing 110MPH in a 65MPH years ago. I took the ticket, went to court, and lost my license for 15 days. No jail...and I'm in ultra-conservative NH.

Thanks, but consider you're one of ATOT's big pricks I'm not really interested in much of what you have to say. At least the others here have a clue.

Yeah but I can go 90-95 in my sentra. Don't you see that although I can't go faster than 110, which you can, in both cases we're in bit trouble if we're caught :Q

I said "when you careen into somebody at 120 mph" :) 120 won't get you jail time for 6 years, but if you kill somebody and it was from reckless speeding you'll have vehicular manslaughter.

What do you drive, a Sentra? Can I consider my Escort an "iteration" of the GT40? :p

It's not me that started a ridiculous thread like this. And I guess because I twisted your panties in a bunch somewhere I now don't have a "clue". Boo hoo.

The point is that this is a dumb thread. People buy stuff that they don't necessarily need because they simply WANT it for whatever reason. DUH.

See, you just will never understand if it's not your thing. If you can appreciate the difference between driving a HP V8 vehicle and a Sentra, you never will. The whole thing will just seem alien to you, so why bother trying to convince everyone else?

I think the guy who had the LEAST fun getting there was the guy who missed the sidewalk light, ran over a 3 year old, and found his journey concluded in the back of a police cruiser :)

Yeah they are definitely all image, but it's an image you can never fulfill, which is really a bit silly.

However, sillier yet, are those who spend money on their cars to make them faster. Now you're actually actively spending money in addition to the original cost of the vehicle for something you'll never use. It's like buying the heaviest most awesome winter jacket in the world - except you live in key west.

And really the silliest is making your street legal car go faster on a 1/4. Great, you just shaved a second off your quarter and spent $6k to do it. Now you can drive at 80 on the highway just like me in my beat up econobox. Wow, what a waste of money!

there are things called drag strips. and autocross. the vw club i belonged to did these things, as well as events at road atlanta. i've moved on to a jeep now, and i spent a sunday a few weeks ago exploring off road in it. so people do actually use their cars for the things they are intended. granted my dad owns a jeep that will never see dirt, much less true off-roading. of course it's a company car, so it's not like it cost him anything. he also feels a little safer when my parents have my daughter, what with all the idiots on the road these days in their subarbans and expeditions.

anyway, not everyone buys a fast car for status. look around, i'm sure there's a track or strip somewhere near you where someone is driving a 350z down it, hoping that 6k he spent will shave a second off his 1/4, or even a few tenths of a second. heck i even know a guy who drags his dodge dakota and does quite well.

edit: oh btw, one of the most annoying things about driving the gti was idiots in hondas and toyotas who constantly pulled up next to me at lights and started reving their engines. most of those stupid cars have some ground effects and stickers and all of a sudden everyone is a drag racer. knowing i could take them was much more satisfying than bothering to let them attempt to stroke their ego, and who the heck is gonna street race with a baby (and a very visable car seat) in the car?!?

Skoorb, I've got your back on this one.

I'm as much as a car enthusiast as the next guy, but the logic surrounding sports cars is very stupid.

A sports car has a higher initial cost, higher insurance, higher fuel cost, higher repair cost, less comfort, less space, etc, etc, etc than any other car on the road.

The cars are fun because they go fast and draw attention. No matter what people will tell you, they really like to show off their car.

The basic premise of a car is to transport a person from point A to point B. It is illegal to go fast, and legally speaking, a nissan sentra will transport you from A to B in a cheaper, safer, and equally fast way as a sports car.

Some guys lack self control or self image. They really think it's fun to go fast and can't control themselves to stay within the limit. It's just like any other human trait that they can't control because they lack the self discipline. Like beating off. It feels good but you need to control it.

Well I think we are arguing the same thing, it might not make logical sense, but like ajpa123 said "Most desirable cars just happen to be fast, and that's that. You get more technological and mechanical refinement as you pay more." I would not buy the car to use it to the full potention I would but it cuz I would enjoy knowing I have a nice car that I myself have worked hard for. It would be my way or rewarding myself for my heard work. I mean idealy I should put all excess money in to savings, but I work hard and I think if I get to the point I can afford a car like that then why not get it, its my money and I made it.

That has nothing to do with owning a car that has 350 horsepower though.
You can hit and kill somewhere in your Sentra just as well as someone driving a sports car or an SUV.

Oh I do appreciate the difference. A fast car is more fun, and I do enjoy driving the maxima more than the sentra, but certainly if the maxima was a 4 0-60 second car I'd never be able to appreciate it because the faster you get the more dangerous you become to those around you. I remember reading a review of an echo and it said something fun about the echo is that you can drive it at its limits on the way to work, which is something you can't do in a corvette. And that's really my point - you can never drive a corvette at its limits. I can't even drive the maxima at its limits without getting in trouble for it. So definitely there becomes a point where your return on investment for the performance of your vehicle is seriously diminished. Imagine the frustration driving a porsche 911 turbo in regular traffic. It's like a caged beast you can never unleash.

Yeah, that's the problem right there. To some people it's simply to get you from point A to point B...to others it's much more. You seem like another exciting person.

One more thing...how would the Sentra be "safer". Do you forget that most higher end "performance cars" have things like better brakes, bigger tires offering a much larger contact patch, better supension, etc. I would argue that the Sentra is less safe.

I have a car that can do 0-60 in sub 5 seconds. I use that legally (drag strip 12.3 1/4).
I have a SUV that has 4 WD and I take that off road.
