I have a 3 button single, 3 pocket (two at the sides, one at the breast) suit jacket, can it also be mistmached with a pair of jeans and used as a sports jacket, or is this a no no?

Dont see any reason why that wont work, seems like a basic black coat, some nice jeans and good pair of shoes should be stylin.

There's no real difference. It all depends on the look of the jacket for whether it would work with your outfit.

Hell, even if it doesn't "work" and people make fun of you, you can just reply with "Heh, I guess this is just too ahead of your time. Don't worry, you guys will be getting around to it in another couple of years."

The lower hang of a suitcoat will be obvious - that's one of the big differences. A suitcoat is meant to be worn with a suit (shows tie, hangs low).
A sportcoat is not, it's shorter and normally has more casual pockets and is meant to be worn open.
But like I said, you "can" get away with using a suitcoat, just depends.

Yeah the best is to get a sport coat I agree, but hes not making a huge fashion police mistake with what hes picking IMHO.

Oh I agree. I just got tired of being in between like OP was and picked up some really nice sportcoats on sale for 50 bucks a piece at like 75% off.

What???
Sportcoats and suit coats should fit the same on a person.
Now there are style differences, in that you can have peaked/notch lapels, single-breasted vs double-breasted, and 2 or 3 buttons. You can also have flapped/besom/patch pockets, with or without a ticket pocket.
But coat length, arm length and all the main measurements should be the same between a suit and a sportcoat.

Don't most sportscoats have a double split in the back? I've never really paid much attention but it just popped into my head.

I am still at a loss to understand what you are talking about in saying that a suit jacket "hangs lower." I have owed at least 20 suits and as many sport coats, including makers as disparate as Zegna, Armani Collezioni, Zanella, Mani, Hickey-Freeman, Hart Schaffner & Marx, Hugo Boss, Kenneth Cole, Joseph Abboud, Corneliani and St. Andrews, and have never observed that a suit jacket "hangs lower." The major difference in my experience is that sport coats sometimes use fabrics that are either too heavy for pants or would not make durable pants (such as cashmere), have patterns that would look strange in pants, or are too casual in cut to work as a suit. The actual fit should be essentially the same (e.g., a 42L Zegna sport coat will fit like a 42L suit jacket).

No vent is the most formal, and usually reserved for formal outfits (tuxedo, dinner jacket)
Otherwise, single vs double vent is personal preference as to which you like best and which looks better.
