athletes today are bigger, faster, stronger so there's no free reign like there used to be.
Actually even though he wasn't an Athlete I would say Bill Walsh dominated Football in the 80's as much as Jordan and Gretzky dominated their sports.Originally posted by: PlatinumGold

and the fact that if he got the ball with the game on the line, the Bulls won...Originally posted by: bobbybe01
I think in the NBA there are a lot of atheletes that are just as good, if not better, and in more shape than Jordan was. However, the only thing (and the big thing) that sets Jordan apart from most of these players today was his drive and determination. That's what made him great.
and they are more capable of stopping the standouts. If you watch hockey, it is most evident. Throw a check into the guy and see if he's still willing to dipsy-doo with the puck like that anymore... that stuff is left to pond hockey now. Gone are the days of Gretzky and Lemieux type dominance because they have someone draped on them moreso than the old days. You can attribute that to the defensive schemes just as much, but you gotta be able to catch them first. For a while, Jaromir Jagr was easily the most dominant player on the ice. This was because he could protect the puck like no other with his strength and make creative plays - then a lot of defenders caught up to him in the gym. There's quite a few defenseman who can take him one-on-one. Even Pavel Kubina.Originally posted by: PlatinumGold

Sampras
no, sampras never won the french.
i'm not even talking grand slam (all 4 in one year). he needed to have won it at least ONCE to be considered an all time great.
otherwise, he's in with a host of other great players, but he isn't an all time great.
ironically, his sidekick Agassi (yes, sampras was the better of the 2) DID win on all four surfaces.![]()

If this stat is wrong then disregard, but hasn't Sampras won the most majors ever? regardless of the slam aspect, that alone puts him second then to the person who did the slam and has more than 8 or so I say.
Didn't he also 3-peat Wimbledon?
