He's the sportsman of the year because of his $10 Million donation to the Tsunami relief.

On another note, Schumi does a lot of charity work that is usually kept pretty quiet. He also helps builds schools in Africa.

$10 million is a drop in the bucket for him. That's about 1/10th of his annual salary. He has more money than he knows what to do with. Still, he's a very talented driver and I have a lot of respect for him.

I have a lot of respect for his off-track personality.

Not so much a fan of his on-track personality, but then usually the best & most successsful F1 drivers have an appalling on-track personality (read: Schumi, Senna, Prost, etc..)

I think they picked the wrong year to pick him. lol.

But yeah, he's been doing charity work for awhile...

Schumacher has been a substantial donor to charities for the last eight years notably with UNESCO and UNICEF including funding a school in Dakar (Senegal), a clinic in Sarajevo and a centre for street children in Lima, peru. He has also been involved in work in his role as a UNICEF ambassador.

...I still think it would have made more sense if he was picked last year... since the F2004 was also the racecar of the year. :D

It is when you've been earning that amount for 6-7 years and you have more money than you know what to do with. I didn't say 1/10th of your salary is a drop in the bucket. I said it is a drop in the bucket for Micheal Schumacher.

He hasn't been earning that much for 6-7 years.

I think he got a substantial jump in earnings and endorsements after his crushing performance in 2002. Before that he probably earned as much as Mika. Wasn't it a few years ago that JV was the highest paid driver there?

Alonso only gets $8mill, even after a WDC.

No, he was the highest paid driver in F1 since joining Ferrari. It was estimated that his annual earnings were over $60 million/year in the late 90s.

Hmm...didn't know that.

I thought JV was the highest paid during his years at BAR.

I wonder how much Senna & Prost got paid in the late 80s early 90s. Williams must have forked out good money for Senna & Prost during their respective year(s) there.

Did you donate 10% of your salary? I sure as hell didn't.

Yeah, apparently he didn't read how Schuey donated more money than most corporations and even some countries. There are plenty of people who make more money than he does, and I bet they didn't donate $10 million.

Percentage wise, I donated about 15% of my gross income. (State & Fed income tax are not considered donations!)

It's not hard to do if you put your mind to it...and don't have a wife & kids.

I'm sure there are other people who donated a lot of money to the Tsunami relief or other causes that we don't know about.

Schumi is pretty secretive about his donations, but for this particular one he went public (by calling into those TV pledge drives!) since he wanted to encourage others to donate too.

Hey, I didn't mean to make light of his donation. It is a staggering figure for sure. Schumacher strikes me as a simple guy. He has a few nice homes, some sweet cars and a collection of custom motorcycles (Harleys). I think he literally has more money than he knows what to do with.

I didn't donate a penny actually. Primarily because I'm a cheapskate when it comes to anything that doesn't benefit me directly. :D
