Split-Screen CO-OP Games

I've been on the hunt for some good Ps3/360 co-op games but as of late have found the screens to be small. =/

I've got Resistance/Army of Two..and would like more with these features for my wife and I (she loves to kill people, hehe).

What I've encountered as of late though are games thats have TINY screens w/ lots of wasted LCD space. Whats up with this?? Namely, the games are Lost Planet 2 (makes SUPER small screens), Resident Evil 5, and COD World at War.
Army of Two and Resistance were no slouch in graphics and they handled full-screen just fine, as well as a Gears of War. I assume it was outputting at 720p on both of those? Not sure. Point is...they handled full split-screen w/o issue.

I've got a Samsung 46" 1080p LCD and both ps3/360 are hooked up via HDMI. Is there anything I can do to make these games go full screen? Please help!!

Also...recommendations for good co-op games (mainly split-screen) are always appreciated...I know they're getting fewer and fewer for some reason. =/

There's got to be some setting you're missing because I have no problem viewing full screen on my HD widescreen LCD.

The PS3 should auto adjust the first time you plug it in. I know some games don't take up the whole screen, but still the majority should. Go to settings> Display Settings> Video Out(or something like that, don't remember since i'm @ work), follow the steps and make sure 720p, 1080p and 1080i and all checked, the game will display on the best resoultion, which is usually 720p.

Borderlands, only problem is you can't link two Xboxes and do split screen on both for a 4-player game. But you can do 2-player split screen. Fun game, a bit grindy though.

If you like a little bromance, try the Army of 2s.

The second one kind of sucked, but still fun coop.

Borderlands
Gears of War 1&2
Splinter Cell Conviction
Modern Warfare 2 (Spec Ops)
Halo (Reach is the newest and funnest IMO, but 3 wasn't bad and should be cheap)

Old thread, but I'm looking for more as well - other than Left 4 Dead / L4D2, any more suggestions? I checked and was sorely disappointed that the Serious Sam HD console ports (and PC versions, for that matter) do not have split screen co-op...sacrilegious, considering the original PC games did!

I found a lot of downloadables titles good for local co-op...

Pixeljunk Monsters
Pixeljunk Shooter
Pixeljunk Eden
Castle Crasher
Fat Princess
Schizoid

However you share a screen for all of these, rather than splitting the screen.

For non downloadable titles there are:

The lego games
Halo series
Gears of War
Resident Evil 5?

I don't really play console FPS, so that shrinks down the potential for retail co-op local games.

Earth Defense Force is the ultimate split-screen co-op game on the Xbox 360. It's the worst game ever if you play single player, but fun mindless co-op action.

It's also uses the full screen. The split screen is actually left/right rather than top/bottom.

Rainbow Six Vegas. Black Ops is split-screen multiplayer, but not campaign. Good fun for zombies too, which I do in split screen 95% of the time.

Only reason I would even consider getting Resistance is because of co-op, I didn't particularly enjoy the first one though.

I'm thinking of getting either Blur or Split/Second. Blur got slightly worse reviews, but it has 4-player split screen vs. Split/Second's 2-player split screen.

I know World at War has zombies...Black Ops does as well? I do need to get Vegas - I borrowed that for a while..good times.

Black Ops does indeed, and if you get the hardened edition it comes with 4 W@W maps, otherwise you only get 2. There is another one coming out in a couple of months, but zombies is not popular enough unfortunately for them to put as much effort into it. If I try playing my favorite W@W map, it says it finds less than 10 matches. That's why I play split screen all the time.

Blur's only problem was the network problems it had all the time. The demo was a LOT of fun, if you could connect to a game. I assumed it was a demo issue, but turns out the issue survived into the release. If it didn't have that issue I'd definitely get it.

I pretty much never play racing games online anyway, so that's not a huge issue for me. I'd want it for split screen local multiplayer. As I understand it, you can't do split screen while playing online, and I have really no desire to play by myself against people online.

Oh yeah, so I really think games need to have clear labeling as to what kinds of multiplayer modes are supported. Blur explicitly mentions 4-player split screen in its description, and reviews of Split/Second reveal that it only supports 2-player split screen, but the official material says that Split/Second supports local multiplayer with 1-4 players. I'm guessing it supports up to 4 players in system link. Nowhere on the package does it specify which split screen modes are supported.

It's really hard to get an idea of how many players you can have per console for games these days and whether local multiplayer can be used in conjunction with online. For the Xbox 360, the Halo games are some of the only ones that allow 4 players per console even in online play, even with just a single Xbox Live account and the rest guests.

I had a bad experience with Borderlands where I wanted to do 4 players on 2 consoles, but we didn't realize that your only options are:

Single player
2 player split screen, offline
Up to 4 players offline, system link, 1 player per console
Up to 4 players online, 1 player per console

You couldn't even use the 2 player split screen in system link! So frustrating that you couldn't do that.

Just finished up Splinter Cell Conviction in co-op, lots of fun. VERY short though, we did it in one sitting. But it was a ton of fun and I think you can get the game pretty cheap.

In addition to the others mentioned in this thread, I had a lot of fun playing Earth Defense Force splitscreen with my brother as well as all of the Dynasty Warrior and Samurai Warrior Games 🙂
