I'm talking about the original Splinter Cell for the PC - NOT Pandora Tomorrow and NOT Chaos Theory.
I bought an Audigy 2 a while back and it came with Splinter Cell. I installed it, but when I try to run the game, I get the standard Windows "This program has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. So I searched online and found a special patch for the version in the Audigy bundle. But that's supposed to fix a specific level bug and, although it installed fine, it didn't fix my problem.
I then thought that maybe I needed to install the official patch after installing the Audigy patch, but I get a "could not retrieve version number" error when running the official patch (I also get this when trying to install the official patch before the Audigy patch). I then did some more searching and somebody said to "copy the original SplinterCell.exe from the CD into the game directory." Well, I combed all three CDs but I don't see a file called SplinterCell.exe on any of them. I also tried to open .cab files, but most appeared empty (at least to whatever program has integrated itself into explorer so that one can open .cabs).
I'm wondering a few things:
Has anybody else encountered this problem? If so, what did you do about it?
Are there any utilities to open the .cab files Splinter Cell uses to pack its data onto the CDs?
