Are they similar to the Hitman games? I know the story lines are very, very different, but how about game play?

Yeah, the gameplay is similar in some ways. Splinter Cell isn't so much about keeping track of guard routes and using disguises, though. It's more about being a ninja and sticking to the shadows, climbing through air ducts, up pipes, and just stealthily taking out everyone. IIRC, in Hitman taking out everyone in a level was pretty hard if you wanted to be stealthy about it.
