Splinter Cell conviction performance

Hi all

Just a few questions about this game's performance. I have an E4500 and 9800GT with 3gb ram and Vista 32bit.
I know my system is low end these days, but with this game I am getting framerates in the 20s at medium graphics and 1440x900 resolution. Is this reasonable, or should I be getting better?? Since this is an unreal engine game, I thought I should be getting better performance. Also, the framerate seems to vary a lot, but not related to what is on screen. That is, with not much going on some areas will have framerates in the 20s and another area that looks similar will be in the high 30s to 40.
So is this the kind of performance others are getting and am I cpu or gpu limited??
Also, does anyone have any suggestions for what parameters to tweak to improve the framerate with minimal loss of visual quality??

The game uses Unreal 2.5 Engine, one may argue was ported poorly to the PC. Another reason for poor performance is that Dynamic Ambient Occlusion, Soft Shadows, and HDR lighting are some of the hardest settings one can throw at a graphics card.

8800GT = 9800GT
Only gets 23 fps at 1680x1050 HQ.

But you also have a slow CPU

Disable HDR, Disable DAO, and you should be good: http://www.gamespot.com/features/6261472/p-2.html

From what I gather around the web this game simply blows. I think your frame rate is "normal".

Performance is probably where it should be. I found it hard to believe my HD 5970 struggled at 5760x1080, but apparently the game is quite hard on your videocard. I don't think it's justified though, considering graphics aren't nearly as good as Bad Company 2's, yet that game runs a lot smoother on my pc ...

Thanks for the replies. I guess the performance is about what I should expect. Does seem poorly ported to the PC though. Mass Effect and Modern Warfare look better and run better too.
