Most American Audiences won't appreciate this movie.
I liked it, but I was more impressed by Princess Mononoke'

This, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Laputa: Castle in the Sky have just been released as excellent 2-disc sets by Disney/Buena Vista. It's amazing to watch the "movified" storyboards and see how true the finished animation is to them.

I'm praying that My Neighbor Totoro will get the same treatment at some point, or does FOX maintain the U.S. distribution rights?

Um, nope, no horses.

Most American audiences? Damn, to anyone who can't appreciate this movie: it's your loss.

Czar: yeah, it's weird :)

Feathers: I saw that multipack for $57 @ deepdiscountdvd. The other two are of this quality?

I don't think you can compare Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron with this movie ;)

They're earlier films, so the animation quality may not appear as detailed as some of the computer-assisted shots in Spirited Away, but the same sense of imagination and whimsy is there. I'd rent first if you're unsure, but I long ago established in my mind that anything with Miyazaki's name tattooed on it is gold.

Spirited Away is an amazing movie. I loved every moment of it.

Miyazaki is one of the best directors of anamated movies I have ever seen.

I also highly suggest Castle In The Sky to anyone.

Heck I even kinda like Kiki's Delivery Service. It's not as good as Spririted Away or Mononoke, but still a very good movie

i loved this movie. the laughs started at the beginning (the version i saw was the japanese one, subtitled in english)... when they subtitled the title, which was already in English. so it was like...

===============

Spirited Away (in regular fancy title font)

Spirited Away (in subtitle font)
===============

that was funny :)

Actually I don't think American kids who with any sense of imagination will have any problem with it - I think their parents are more likely the ones who won't "get it." Because there is no good vs evil, no black and white, everything is gray - which is sort of the point Miyazaki is conveying. When you look at Spirited Away nothing was really resolved except for Chihiro getting out of the place and saving her parents, but all the other characters you don't really know what happens, there is that sense of openness, the grayness.

Well I liked it, and the Region 1 version doesn't have that awful red tint that the Japanese version has. Then again they don't have that annoying introduction from the guy at Pixar saying how lucky we are to watch the film.

Spirited Away was a great movie, and also quite different from Princess Mononoke even though they're both fantasy themed anime. Mononoke is "heroic fantasy" like LOTR while Spirited Away is more of a "fairy tale" like the Brothers Grim, Hans Christian Andersen, and the Celtic story of Tam Lin ... or the greek myth of Orpheus.

I just watched Kiki which was also quite good though more low-key than the other two. The main character is a young witch, but she's not the Chosen One and not fighting some Great Evil or out to Save The Day. It's much more about growing up and trying to make a place in the world. Well done, but not as exciting.

Next up: Castle in the Sky (thanks Netflix!)

If anyone thinks American audiences wouldn't understand or appreciate this film, first look up its rating on Rottentomatoes.

I went to the first showing of it at the El Capitan theater in LA, it was PACKED with AMERICAN kids and PARENTS who all really seemed to enjoy the film.

Well it basically is a Alice in Wonderland story.

Yeah, I loved this movie. Strangely, the first time I watched it was on a trip with my Japanese class.
