I think the most expensive movie ever was Avatar at about 150 mil, where do you guys come up with half a beelion?

From Wiki,(and yes, I know Wiki is not the know-all be-all truth teller) but here's what they list...

"Due to the secretive nature of Hollywood accounting it is not clear which film is the most expensive film ever made. Spider-Man 3 officially holds the record with an acknowledged cost of $258 million, while Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and its sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End were produced together on a combined budget of $450 million, making them the most expensive production. Although the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels shared many costs it is estimated that around $300 million was spent on producing At World's End. More recently there have been reports that Avatar is the most expensive film ever made with speculation that it cost $280 million."

****ing video games have better stories and are better written than a lot of movies now. Movies are embarrassing. Its all terrible sequels (Transformers, Scary Movie, Taken 2 (LOL how bad was this movie?)) + anything with Vin Diesel in it... lol

Yeah, I'm gonna pay $25 to see 'masterpieces' like Avatar 🙄

I don't understand how movies are getting more expensive to make when everything is CGI now. It's not like they need to make expensive sets like they did 30 years ago.

cgi isn't cheap. my buddy works on cgi on movies as a contractor. like a 10 second clip will come in that he has to do some work on, and it can take over a month for that 10 second clip to have it's work done.

also if you look at the credits now a days they are a lot longer than before, so more people are involved. more people cost more money.

According to wiki Tangled, an animated Disney movie, was the second or third most costly movie ever made.

When you step back and look at it though, how stupid is that? The computers are doing most of the work, and a lot of the CG animation is way over the top. It almost seems like hand-drawing would be cheaper (and perhaps more memorable).

okay maybe the pieces of equipment are not "better" than the ones at movie theaters, but movies sound better in my setup than most theaters. sorry if that wasn't clear enough to you.

That's kind of like saying my Polks sound better than your $6k speakers.....not REALLY.

But it is close enough (that's for sure) and definitely NOT worth the premium price.

You just validated my statement of "difference is MINIMAL at 10x-20x the cost".

Thanks

I go to the theater like 2 times a year. I just rather get comfortable on my couch and order a movie on comcast or amazon. They are usually like $5-6 in HD, and I can watch it as many times as I want for 24 hours. Not to mention, I don't have to deal with the people in the theater who don't have the common courtesy to be quiet during the movie.

you clearly know nothing about audio.

thanks for validating that!

Going back to the comment on Shawshank Redemption, movies like that would probably not attract the people who are likely to behave badly in theaters.

There was a story in today's paper about how long the trailers go on before the feature is played and how it's such a money maker for the theaters they won't cut back.

Given how supposedly tough it is for theaters these days, I'm surprised that they don't choose to zealously police bad behavior and make that a selling point. "One text and you're ejected!" like that viral story about the woman who got booted out of an Alamo Drafthouse and how the theater made a promo video out of it.

I'm fortunate that for whatever reason, the movies I've seen at our local theater had no punks in attendance.

i've definitely noticed that there are no more ushers walking up/down the aisles with that glowing light like there used to be a decade ago. wish they still did that to tell kids to put their phones and shit away.

Yes I know nothing about Audio.

Coming from a guy that says his home theater sounds/is better than a movie theater and spends 6k on pair of speakers and doesn't even know how to hook it up proper/listens to Analog sound all along......until someone teaches him how ignorant he is.

Riiiiight

I know NOTHING about Audio

nothing in this post is accurate, but continue to troll as you always do.

25 dollar tickets is not going to happen.

They actually need people to go see movies in theatres. Disposable income is down, not up for the average American.

They've got the IMAX and 3D and the IMAX+3D for rates close to $20. Those who can afford it will do that, most cant which is why those theatres comprise 1 out of 20 screens rather than 50% or higher of available screens.

im pretty sure i know people whos HT setups will measure better than most movie theaters

smaller screen is really the only difference

I dare the movie studios to price the next blockbusters at $25. Go ahead, make my day, just so I can see their profits go up in smoke and watch them destroy their industry.

The IMAX + 3D is close to $20 a pop in some cities. My local theater has the D-Box seat (rumble and tilt seats) + 3D and that cost $19.50. I can see IMAX + 3D + D-Box seat hitting $25 for the full experience. Movies need some new gimmicks to get people in the theaters so no, I wouldn't just go to a regular theater and pay $25. Mount the whole theater onto a hydraulic motion + 3D and IMAX, I'll pay $25 for that to watch Star Wars Episode 10.

That is probably # 1 reason I hate theaters. People are fucking annoying and inconsiderate.

Yep. I stopped going to the theaters because it had the potential to become a very costly outing. Not because of ticket prices or refreshments, but the bail money I'd have to come up with for beating some asshole behind me that can't STFU! Seriously, it was only getting worse as time went on. The final straw was when this asshole behind me had his phone go off while the movie was going on. I calmly sat there and said to myself, "calm down, I'm sure it was just a mistake and he is going to quickly turn it off." NOPE! Not only did he not turn it off, he answered it. Not only did he answer it, he proceeded to carry on a conversation. Not only did he start carrying a conversation, he was talking in a normal conversational voice like he was in a bar or something. At that point, I quickly turned around and said, "are you fucking serious?!" It was only then, that he realized it was time to take his conversation outside.

Since then, which was years ago, I just wait for the movie to come out on BD and just buy it. I find watching movies at home to be a much more relaxing, involving and just overall a much more enjoyable experience.

Spielberg is wrong. The growing international markets have actually made it less risky to release big budget films. Even films that bomb domestically will often recoup enough money in foreign to greatly soften the blow to the studio relative to what would have happened a decade ago. Because of this the major studios are more apt to green light films that will appeal to the global box office. India really doesn't give a shit about seeing Lincoln or Red Tails.

Other distribution platforms like cable and online have been picking up the slack in the art market for a number of years now, this isn't a new phenomenon. The niche films that he's talking about can still be made and he is one of the few people in a position to actually put his money where his mouth is. I kind of find it disingenuous to bemoan the state of the industry and bitch about having trouble getting your film out when you're a billionaire studio owner. Dreamworks has also been responsible for a number of high profile/high budget bombs so this sounds more like sour grapes. Studios like Disney and Warners take their licks but move on to the next film and don't wallow in self pity.

Yes, the movie industry did it to themselves. The people who would have flocked to a movie with a great story even if it didn't have big special effects, nudity, cursing and violence have long since given up on going to the theater because they don't make movies like that.

The whole entertainment industry is so self-absorbed they are more motivated by what their peers will think instead of what will be successful.

Independent/Artsy/Foreign movies do just fine...your sweeping generalizations are profoundly myopic.

Not only does that cost money (staffing) I am willing to bet its not worth it to the movie theater to cause a scene and piss off some entitled asshole who thinks they should be able to do whatever they want where ever they want.

Sure there are those of us who get pissed off but I wonder if we are in the ever decreasing minority

I really enjoy seeing movies, but more often than not, I've been walking away disappointed. Maybe I've just become a bit cynical over time, but it seems that Hollywood just forgot how to craft a good story. Now, unlike some people here that seem to hate action movies, I'm not really that way; however, when I talk about a good story, I'm including action movies in that. Even though people may associate emotional connections with dramas, they're also fairly important in action movies. In my experience, the only reason why you care about a character in a tough spot is because you either want to see some crazy, bad-ass way that they'll get out of it, or you're actually worried about their well-being. One of my favorite examples that would be worthy of a "You're Doing It Wrong" meme would be The Green Lantern movie. Completely ignoring the bastardization of Parallax, Hal Jordan just was not written very well. He came off as whiny and selfish, which are not heroic traits. I mean... it's called a superhero movie for a reason! It wasn't until about the last five to ten minutes where the movie took a turn for the better, but that won't save the previous 1.5 hours.

Honestly, I don't think I've seen a single movie this year in the theaters that I've enjoyed. None of them are over $10 on my How Much Would I Pay for It on Blu-Ray scale, and some are barely worth $5!

His basement stereo system can very well sound better. The theater has to spend an insane amount of money to scale up the sound to a massive room. Gigantic amps, gigantic speakers (and more speakers to cover the area), huge screen and projector. And you got the premium cost of so few being made for a theater size venue. Sound and visuals don't like to scale up either, so you can have quality loss all around. Iv'e heard many many home systems that sound and look much better than theaters.
