It needs the blood of mammals.

I could do a "kill Toby" site, where if I get enough donations, I'll feed the mouse to the spider!

That spider doesn't freak me out like other smaller, faster, and uglier spiders do. Yay for calm and relaxed tarantulas! About how much would you say she weighs?

Well.... she's grown about 3" in the past year. So for her to be 3' that gives her about 35 years or so to become a national threat :)

In actuality, she'll be full grown at about 8", which will probably be in a couple years. After that she'll probably molt once a year, but not gain any size. I don't have any comparison, but by my best guess she could live 25 years or more.

Very cool spider.
Though I actually generally like spiders since they eat pests like flies and mesquitoes (at least smaller spiders do ... I dunno about ones THAT big)

Hardly anything - maybe around a stack of 15 business cards or so? Definitely less than a standard staple remover. I don't have an accurate scale to weigh her, so I'm trying to guess by picking up object around me.

The heaviest spider I've read about is a 12-13" one that was about 4oz

Jeez... can she jump? Also... was your girlfriend scared of spiders before you met her?

I'm getting freaked out imagining a 13" spider... even if it is just from tip of leg to tip of leg...

She can't jump, but she can't move VERY quickly when she wants to. My smaller spiders (different species) however CAN jump - something that very much surprised me. They are tree tarantulas (Avicularia avicularia), whereas the Golden Knee (above) is a terrestrial spider.

Aren't all girls afraid of spiders? My girlfriend was at first too, but she's gotten used to them over the past year. Once you get past the initial "shock" of the spider, they are actually very interesting. If you have a tame one I think they make great pets. Super easy to take care of, and always interesting to other people.

How long do those spiders live on average? I'm just wondering if the pet is a good investment.

Nobody really knows for this particular species, since no one has had them long enough. However, similiar species have lived 20+ years (females only). I estimate my spider at 2 years.... so definitely a long term investment - but a very easy one too.

Crickets mostly, and now I've been feeding her mice after a molt.

Speaking of which, isn't it time for another "what should I feed my spider" thread. :D
