Spending too much money on lunch..

I'm a computer tech for a small company and I'm spending way too much money on lunch. I usually do 3-5 calls each day at our clients offices and I pretty much never see my office once I leave in the morning. The only thing I'm able to get for lunch is from restaurants/fast food places.
I'm trying to think of a way to approach my boss to give me either a lunch allowance or schedule time for me to be back in the office to eat. I know there are alternatives like bringing a cooler with me everywhere in the car, but that is such a hassle and I'd prefer not to have to do that.
Anyways, I'll keep it short and sweet and see if anyone else has come up against this problem. If you have, what was your solution?

If you're too lazy to pack a lunch, at least bring some snack food with you that you can eat during the day. You won't be as hungry during lunch time and possibly spend less.

Before I started my current job I was a field network tech and like you, I was constantly on the go. I did 4-6 calls a day and always tried to work the calls so I was done with a call around 11:00 Am CST. I packed a lunch in a small lunch cooler with that blue ice stuff. The cooler is a cheapo walmart but it has a separator to keep your drink(s) from your food so as not to get it soggy. I'd pack a snack in case I got hungry before or after lunch. I usually just made sandwiches or something on a hoagie roll with some chips and a dessert. It all fit in well. It's really your only alternative to eating fast food every day.

This is great advice.
And the only way you are going to save money is by not doing the fastfood/restaurant route.
So put some effort forward and pack a lunch yourself.

I just started eating cheaper. I mean, how much food do you really need for lunch? Most fast food places have dollar menus now that make it extremely easy to get a sandwich and a drink for two bucks.

There is no magic way to save money if you're not willing to pack your own lunch. I guess you have to either hit your boss up for $30 a week for lunch, or suck it up, take 15 minutes the night before hand, and pack your own damn lunch.

Pack a lunch. It should take you more than 3 minutes to make a sandwich and pack it in a small cooler (get a soft sided one if you don't like the big hard sided ones).

I always pack a lunch since it is cheaper and healthier than going out everyday.

I packed when I was an field consultant, instead of using a cooler that requires ice, I had a small cooler that plugged into the 12v car outlet and kept my stuff cool. No ice, and would just put my stuff in the cooler when I left in the morning and threw out the garbage after I ate.

You need to pack a lunch. If you really cared about fixing your money-spending problem, then suck it up and accept the small lifestyle change of setting aside 15-30 mins. a night to prep your lunch for the next day.

Or do what my friend does:

Spend an hour or two cooking all meals for the week on Sunday. They're packed up and ready to go for each morning.

Take a cooler. My girlfriend's dad is a salesman for an 80+ mile range and packs his lunch in a cooler every day.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I was really hoping someone would have a good excuse for me to hit my boss up for lunch money though 🙂.

The obvious answer is:

Steal other people's food from the office fridge before you go out on your morning rounds.</end quote></div>

Isn't that also a really good way to save money and get stabbed in the face?

Not if you have the bigger bread knife.

another vote for cooler/blue ice/sandwich

When I used to do it, I made everything the night before and threw everything in the minicooler in the morning. Seriously, it takes <5 minutes and will save you tons of money a month.

I'm too lazy to pack a lunch so I just take some campbell's soup with me. the new ones you throw in the microwave and you're done. easy to take in, easy to make and eat
