Spending 3 to 4 hundred - advice?

I am building a machine to surf the net - multiple windows open - and I want to be fast. {I do stock market}.

Desire your opinion on best value on chip plus motherboard for 3 to 4 hundred. Would prefer motherboard use DDR1 as I already have that. Plan on using 4 gig. IDE or SATA does not matter. Would prefer no on board video to hog my memory. Built in Lan and sound about all I need. Also would prefer AGP video slot but realize that probably impossible as everything now is PCI - E.

Anyway suggestions on fast chip motherboard combination appreciated.

thanks

You should strongly consider moving into 2007 and go with DDR2 memory and PCI-E graphics.

Sell your memory on e-bay you'll get decent money for it.

$300 is WAY overkill to surf the net with. So is 4GB of RAM.

You should be able to pick up an Athlon 64 mobo/CPU combo for like $150, and then you can burn $75 on a vid card with dedicated RAM. 2GB of RAM is all you should want, and it's WAY more than you'll need. Hell, I game on 1GB!!

$58 NF4 socket 939 board.

$50 Athlon 64 3200 Venice 2.2Ghz

$65 Passive 7300GS w/ 256MB RAM onboard.

It CAN share RAM, but with 256MB onboard you won't need it to, and I believe you can set that in the control panel.

Even those components are hardcore overkill for your needs, and you're way under $200.

No you shouldn't. In 2007, like in all past years, surfing the internet doesn't require DDR2 or PCI-e. Hell, most top end cards can barely be proved to need PCI-e over AGP.

That said, PCI-e is cheap and common, so there's no issue with it. Moving to DDR2 is dumb and expensive for a cheapo platform and it's bad advice.

That is not true; DDR2 is no more expensive than DDR.

Sure you can go out and spend $500+ on some ultra high-end DDR2 sticks and only end up with 2 gig of ram, but you can also get a pair of high quality DDR2 667 or 800 1 gig sticks for the exact same price as DDR.

Moving to PCI-e is good advice, as is moving to DDR2.

LINK EDIT: Here is some good DDR2 memory for the price. I use it in my rig, and I have it running @ 940 with no problems.

I'd have to agree with that. For $400 you can build a real nice base for a C2D system to o/c with something like an e6300 and a P5B-Dlx, for example, which is way overkill for Internet and what your needs seem to be.

I'd recommend moving to PCI-E for sure. DDR2 I'd recommend also but not as much. If you wanted to use your RAM, you could build a nice DDR1 system that would suit your needs for much cheaper.

What's your overall budget?

Is DDR2 the best option when buying a new pc right now? I mean ddr is still pretty fast

I agree. DDR is no longer available. Go for DDR2.

You should think about a descent mobo with Core 2 Duo and no worries about internet performance for the rest of your life.

Did you read his post? He wants it to be "cheap and fast" and notice he does stock market work. Have you ever worked with trading programs? If you have you would know they require a lot of system resources. I've seen guys that have 20 or more windows open at the same time, some are windows within windows, but they are all charting in realtime, doing calculations, and you have to know what is going on immediately, lag=losing money.

So for that reason I suggested moving to DDR2. That way he can move to a fast processor like the C2D, even at standard settings, with 1GB of memory he'll have a very fast system. And this one would be upgradeable by adding more memory in the future if he finds 1GB is paging too much.

You just had to get personal didn't you? You couldn't say "I don't think it's necessary to move to DDR2, you could save money and spend it on...."

No, you had to call the suggestion "dumb" and in the imply that I am dumb.

I am NOT going to insult you in turn. I just wanted to point out there are other ways to disagree without being insulting.

You're making him angry. You won't like him when he's angry.
