Spelling and grammar. (poll)

There seems to be an abundance of people who are incapable of spelling simple words, or can't construct basic sentences without making the typical your/you're/its/it's/etc errors. My question is, why is that? Is it because the such population is less educated? Or is it because they simply don't care, can't be bothered to make the miniscule effort required to not make the errors?

I know it's been brought up in the past here, by others and myself included. But I still wonder about it, and it still has not improved. I make errors too - nobody is perfect. I probably make a lot of mistakes without realizing or correcting them, too. But the ones I know of or notice, I try to correct.

Simple poll. Do you make the effort, or no? Post in the thread with your comments if you like.

I put in effort to make sure my spelling and grammar is correct, but I don't put a lot of effort into my typing. Therefore, I usually get your/you're, Bobs/Bob's, etc. correct, but I mess up things like just -> jsut in the -> int he.... stuff like that.

That's understandable, not everybody types at 90-100% accuracy at 100-130wpm like I do. 😛

Typos and spelling/grammar errors are completely different. Typos actually don't bother me at all. But to see people spell very very simple words incorrectly, is kind of annoying.

i try to make sure my spelling and grammer are always correct. however, i rarely use capitalization, but i guess i will sometimes when it comes to proper nouns.

my roommate is pretty bad when it comes to spelling/grammar, I kind of am a perfectionist about it, so I get pissed when I see him spell "when" "wen"

I'm pretty vigilant about my own--I'll even go back and edit old posts if I find any errors.

But, I try not to criticize the mistakes of others. If I can understand what you're saying, that's enough... but I do notice 🙂

There's a fish hobbyist forum which I visit, and the grammar there is terrible compared to AT. Some people over there write like 6 year olds. I think the grammar here is better because AT is full of geeks.

EDIT: I forgot an apostrophe.

yeah, it's not like I made fun of him about it, I just told my other roommate about it and we got a laugh 🙂 it was a note to the roomie I pointed it out to, saying to call some guy back.

<< i alawysmakkee sur taht my grammaar is corrext. >>

I see that, but what about your spelling? 😉

It's a rare day when my grammar isn't spot-on, but I'll skew spelling every now and again because, like most people my age, I learned spelling with phonics (not hooked on phonics thankyouverymuch). Usually I'll find a synonym though 🙂

The most irksome habit is the use of "u" "r" "2" etc. Not even for a worthwhile reason, just distresses me to no end.

I know of many college graduates that cannot for their life spell corectly. They even go as far as, "Oh, I thought that's how it was spelled!" or "No, I'm correct and you're wrong!"

naw ,wy shuodl i crae abuto me speilng adn grammra?

Actually, I'm perfectionistic, so I _try_ to do it according to the rules =)

I'm not perfect, but I try to follow the rules of the English language.

Hehehe. By the way RSI, I don't think it's proper to start a sentence with But.

This fairly reflects my view too. I should say, though, that I would have noted the grammatical error in the first sentence by Luv2Chill. I'm messing with ya, Luv2Chill. So, please don't take it seriously. 😉

"i try to make sure my spelling and grammer are always correct. however, i rarely use capitalization, but i guess i will sometimes when it comes to proper nouns."

Did you catch your spelling of 'grammar' early enough or was that actually your correct version? 😉 Hehehe! 😀

Well, RSI, it is sad and embarrassing to say that many of those who misspell often and with poor grammatical structures are usually the supposedly educated ones. I cannot blame the graduate students because it is what their teachers teach or taught them. The teachers themselves are just as confused. I was so confident with my spelling and grammar abilities until I encountered bad teachers or lecturers during high school and college. They would say "rather then" instead of "rather than". They would use "effect" when they mean to say "affect". They would write "existance" instead of "existence", etc.

I think the second source of the discrepancy is the technology we have now that affords us a spell check and a grammar check.

See, luckily I tended to learn things myself. So, I learned how to spell with my own system. I think my system is founded upon memory primarily and then pronunciation. I tend to picture words and can tell based on the mental picture whether my spelling is right or not. Whenever in doubt, I consult with my dictionary--not people.

As for grammar, it's the same old story. Luckily I had an excellent English lecturer at some point in my life. I did not appreciate her that much at that time, but later I learned the invaluable information she had served us. I also have a couple of great books with authoritative authors that I read on English grammar and composition. 🙂

You would think people would take note of corrections, but, sadly, it falls on deaf ears or blind eyes. 🙂

No, I just think that there are alot of lazy people that just don't take time to type the correct spelling/grammar. Alot of people are on AOL also, so that should tell you something also. Remember AOL is for tards. Internet made very simple. So even Osama can log on to the net without a problem. =O

If it's a serious post I take the writing of it very seriously and re-read it several times to check for mistakes. Often though, and especially here, I find myslef writing "fast and loose" in order to respond quickly and get back to whatever it is I'm actually supposed to be working on. Post's that are really bad I do take less seriously than those that are written well.
