Spell checker in outlook express "halts"

I just installed win xp home sp2. Now in outlook express (ver 6.00.2900) when I try to use spell checker it says "an error has occured while performing spell check"

I am running office 97 standard. When I was using windows 98se, the spell checker in outlook express worked fine. Any input would be appreciated.
