Spell-check run amok changes names in Pa. yearbook
2 hours ago

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. ? A computer spell-checker run amok christened several Pennsylvania high school students with new ? and in some cases unflattering ? last names.

Middletown Area High School's yearbook listed Max Zupanovic as "Max Supernova," Kathy Carbaugh as "Kathy Airbag" and Alessandra Ippolito as "Alexandria Impolite," just to name a few.

"It was kind of funny, but kind of rude at the same time," Ippolito said.

The mistakes were found on four of the yearbook's 176 pages, co-editor Amanda Gummo said.

Ed Patrick of Taylor Publishing, which printed the book, said his company is responsible for the errors and will provide free stickers printed with the correct names.

"It happens all the time, every year," Patrick said. "Look at any yearbook in the country."

Just like Michael Scott found out, you shouldn't trust a GPS (technology) too much.

Probably something like that. My high school's yearbooks were always $70 or so but I never bought one. I got them for free at the end of my senior year.

Back when I was in school all the yearbook company did was print what we gave them. It's kinda funny that schools must be handing them shit that they need to run spell check on the submissions.

I wonder if the proofs reflected the mistake and the editor didn't look closely at them?

Kathy Airbag is the pits though. :p

How'd you like to go through life being known as Alexandria Impolite?

You're right though, Kathy Airbag sounds fat.

I thought they posted a list of all the names before publishing and you could double check it before it was sent for printing.

Anyone watch the 'Rogue Taxidermist' video linked on the side of the article? Creepy. I'd be shocked if that guy isn't found wearing people's faces some day.

too bad it was pre-paid or they can withhold the cash til it's fixed
stickers... right... may as well give them some whiteout liquid and a .3mm rollerball.

This is crazy. I was in charge of names one year for the yearbook staff, and we went through 4 or 5 checks for spelling, when we sent out rosters for each homeroom to verify. I typed up the first and last name sin Excel and never messed with spell check...

You may lol now, but it's more important when you look back at your high school yearbook in 20 years.

I also agree that stickers are a laughably unacceptable fix for this.
