Speedstream DSL modem

I'm having some intermittent trouble with my Speakeasy DSL connection, and have no idea what it could be. At first I thought it might be the sharing of the connection through an Ethernet hub, but now it's happening without any other PCs connected.

There are four LEDs on the front, labeled SYS, ATM, DSL, and ENET. SYS is always solid green. During normal operation, DSL and ENET will blink quickly in unison while ATM is solid green. When the trouble happens, no data gets through and ENET is solid green, DSL is completely off, and ATM blinks amber for 30-60 seconds, then blinks green for 10 seconds, then goes solid and it returns to regular no trouble mode.

Any suggestions? It's worked fine for almost two years, and just started the trouble.

Add'l info: so I just listened to a streaming audio broadcast for over two hours with no problems whatsoever, then turned on the other PC on the network, and the DSL went crazy as described above, almost exactly the instant Windows started booting on the other PC.

Grrrr....

1. How is your Connection?

DSL Modem ? Main Computer ? Second NIC ? Hub ? Second Computer.

Or: DSL Modem ? Hub ? Two computers.

2. What is the Authentication Scheme (PPPOE) ?

The way your describing it looks like your modem is losing sync with your dslam. You either have a problem with the modem, your line or your dsl provider.
Give them a call and describe what your problem is.

If its happening when you fire up the other computers then its most likely the modem.

One way to tell for sure is to take out hub and all other computers.. hook modem directly to main computer.. see if problem continues.

If problem continues then disconnect main computer and watch the modem... might be a long watch. 🙂
If you see modem do the same thing you know for sure its modem, line or them.

JackMDS:
1) It's the second one, Wall -> DSL Modem -> Hub -> both PCs.
2) Huh? 😱 Showing my rookie-ness now, I know...

AKA:
Yeah, I should call the ISP, but it's really wierd that I haven't seen this until now. If I were to hook the DSL modem directly to the PC, do I use a crossover or straight-through cable? I know I use a crossover between the DSL modem and the Uplink port on the hub...

Thanks guys,
Jason

Edit: fixed typo

In this case, how do you connect to the ISP? Using the software provided by the ISP?

No, I just configure the network settings to use my static IPs, and look for the ISP's DNS servers and gateways - plug and play, no fuss no mess.

That could be why. Some of the ISP doesn't allow simultaneous connection of multiple computers using 1 single IP address. Try to disconnect other computers so that only 1 computer is connected, and see if the problem stays.

You mentioned you're using fixed IPs, is each machine you have connected using a different IP address?

No, I have two static IPs through my ISP and each PC is set to a different one.

Oh, and yesterday the desktop dorked up without the laptop even being powered on or connected. Grrr...
