SpeedStream 2-Port Router + NIC: $65 - $40 Rebate = $25

Pretty Cool

I just went to CompUSA to pick up the freebie tv tuner and noticed this deal. Looks like a B&M-only deal since the website pricing is wrong.

SpeedStream 2-Port DSL/Cable Router SKU - 288203 $40 - $40 rebate when purchased with the NIC listed below:

SpeedStream PCI 10/100 Ethernet Card SKU - 288808 $25

This is very tempting as I need a router for the two PC's here at home. It seems to be a good router (even though it is only 2 ports) and includes a switch instead of the usual HUB, a firewall, etc.

Some info:

- 10/100 Switched RJ-45 for network connection (auto MDIX/MDI)
- External supply
- Compatible OS: Web-based interface; Compatible with any OS that supports Netscape® or IE 4.0 and up web browsers, including Windows, MacOS*, and Linux* (* = not supported tech support wise)
- DHCP Server,DHCP Client, and NAT (Network Address Translation)
- Supports VPN Tunneling via L2TP, PPTP, and IPSec pass-through

Anyone with any experience when it comes to this router and/or company (product wise)?

Edit: I just realized that there are no CompUSA stores in my area (closest is 100 or so miles). Anyone have any ideas on getting this deal online?

Thantks guys for the post.. I do need a router for 2 computer and I missed the BB deal a couple of weeks ago. I may pick it up tomorrow....

I went ahead and got in on this deal. Just so happened I got my DSL from MSN recently who gave me a cheap DSL modem...and so was perfect for a cheap router like this.

Price may not be marked properly on CompUSA's shelves, but it is on the last page of this weeks ad.

Opened it up at home, plugged all the wires in, got into the html based admin section and had it set up and running in about 5 minutes. It may not be top of the line, but it works perfectly for the 3 PC's in my house accessing the net.

A nice, functional, router for about 30 beans ain't bad at all!

Can somebody help me out with this, i went to CompUsa monday, and could only find rebates for the 4-port router or the wireless access point. Also I didn't see any advertised price of this being 65 dollars and it was marked 79.99 on the Shelves. I went to the only CompUsa here in Kansas City.

it's a real nice router... i got mine back in november or december for 79.99 - 50.00 mail-in-rebate. although i got it for 30.00, anything under 50.00 is reasonable for a router of this quality.

I have a simple LAN with 2 computers and a Linksys switch. Where would this router fit into the network?

This 2 port router can take the place of your Linksys switch. If you wanted to use your switch as well you could get a crossover cable and connect it to one of the ports on the router and then to the uplink on your switch, but for just 2 computers it'd be easier to just replace the switch with the router.

Thank you Pretty Cool - it was odd because yesterday (April 10th) I checked on their website and it said free router with purchase, but everytime I added it to basket it did not take off the instant rebate and said total was $104 or something close to that... 🙁

Ordering one now though, yay! 😀

Just a counterpoint...

I bought this router at Microcenter because it was the cheapest one they had, but I had to retorun it because I could not get it to work. Hardware like this is supposed to be plug-and-play, but I could never get to the web setup page. After a night of unplugging and rebooting my computer and dsl modem i took it back and exchanged it for a Xsense 4-port router deal.

The Xsense router worked like a charm the first time I plugged it in. Got to the web setup page and off I'm running.

I'm using Bellsouth FastAccess and WinXP.

Recieved mine two days ago. Had some trouble with firmware upgrade but all ended up good. Works fine, no complaints...

For a much better deal, there is a rebate for $10 for the LAN card too, but it must be purchased between Feb 15 and April 15.
Forgot the URL, it's here on AT somewhere

why not just get a couple of Lan cards, and a crossover cable? I got a 50 ft cat 5e crossover for $9, and NICs for $1 each from deals listed on this board a while back

i have the 4-port model...it works great, esp. like the built-in print server...still waiting for the $30 rebate (about 2 months now)....

SkeeT😎

How is that a better deal? It is a very good deal for a NIC, yes, but this is a NIC at regular price PLUS a FREE router - or in my case, about a ~$10 router after S&T (shipping & taxes).

Uhhh, because then everything is software based? Sorry, but software wise (like sygate) just does not cut it for me. I do not want to have my main PC on just so others can access the internet (that is if you make one PC have 2 NICS and connet the other to the main PC). I also want to be able to expand later (switches are cheap these days, 4-ports for $25 or so) on and have a nice central place for redirecting traffic (e.g. if I create an FTP server or whatnot). Also, a router comes with NAT and firewall support, although this one does NOT come with a printer port.

hudsonhauck: I was referring to this thread, although there is debate on whether the full price will be refunded.

Thread Info

Fusion: warthogah was suggesting that you send in the $10 NIC rebate as well as the $40 router/NIC offer. However, since both require an original UPC, chances are your request will be initially denied. You must then "convince" that company why they should honor your rebate.

Now the website is updated and the combo is actually only $25 after INSTANT rebates. This looks like a great deal now, As others have pointed out in this thread, there is actually a $40 mail in rebate available until 5/25 allowing you to make $15 on the deal. Might be worth checking out if you are in need of a cheap, heck, maybe even free, router.
