Speedstep, use when OCing or not?

You running LinX with HT disabled? You will get lower throughput (and less stress on the chip) if you have HT enabled while running it.

that some low core voltage. Seems like 4Ghz is the speedstep limit. The high idles are kinda scary but whatever, i can live with it.

seems like it, or perhaps it's the bus speed that speedstep doesn't like. For whatever reason I couldn't seem to find any combination of voltages to make 20x200 stable with all the power saving features enabled. It looks like 1.248vcore is going to get me stable now without speedstep. Perhaps I can hit 4.2ghz afterall. But I still think either I need to reseat the noctua or I just have a hot running chip. Mid 70s with only 1.248v doesn't seem right. And I don't know why you thought HT was dissabled, it's enabled.

what are your ambient temps like? and really 70-80c isnt too bad, thats what they hit under load stock with the stock cooler.

I would only get worried above 80c, which mine will hit if my ambients get over 30c which lucky for me is not too often. And i dont fold or anyhting so its not like its running 100% all the time like some people run there systems.

I got speedstep working again!!!

i was messing around and upped the QPI/Uncore voltage to 1.35V, which happens to be the same as the CPU core now. And now speedstep seems to work fine, im going to do some more testing but it ran prime95 for 4 hours yesterday just fine. Idles at 35-40c now(@2400Mhz).

Interesting. I'll try messing with the qpi voltages once I get this stable. I was sad to wake up this morning to the windows screen. According to the event log I was stable 6 hours but blue screened at 6 and a half. Probably just need one more notch of vcore?

thats not bad at all, i dont think its the temps then, up voltage another notch, i usualy increase voltage in (EDIT, missed a 0).025v intervals. What is your CPU and uncore/QPI voltages set to now?

CPU Vcore: 1.208v (full load in CPUz)
CPU PLL: 1.45v
IOH: 1.1v
QPI: 1.3v

Vcore was at 1.2v full load when I crashed after 6 hours.

yeah you still have lots of room for voltage on the core, ill bet you will make it if you keep tweaking the voltage.

You were spot on with the qpi voltage. If the system isn't stable with speedstep it's most likely the qpi voltage. I found it easiest to find my stable overclock with it dissabled and then enable it after and see where I'm at. When I had to up my qpi to 1.3 to get it 12 hours stable that also made me stable with speedstep enabled again today. Before I couldn't even boot into windows with speedstep.
