Forgive me if there's a simple explanation... but I can run speakeasy speed tests and get 6 down through my router, but when i'm connected via wifi, my speeds drop to 2.5 down, 3 max.

My router is closed and I use a 64-bit wep key.

That's just the nature of wireless. It's slow.

You could also have a lot of noise/interferrence so try a different channel on the access point. 1, 6 or 11.

Tried switching channels... no help. I'm assuming my router, which is about a year old, isn't up to snuff.

You probably have interferrence. Nothing you can do about it.

If you can try and force your access point to only use 802.11g modes. Turn off 802.11b support. It may help some. If you've only got 802.11b, then that is part of the problem becuse B will never see more than 4-5 Mbs on a good day.

Fair enough!

But check if the router is G mode or mix mode. Check your adapter is A, B or G.

Changed your aver. TX-rate and drop the beacon on settings!
