Easy. Just elevate the rear wheels (Mustang) with jack stands, get in the car and have at it. However, pray like hell the car doesn't vibrate too much and break away from the jack stands. :Q

In my area, most of the service stations perform emission tests. As part of the emission test, the vehicle is required to sit on "rollers" installed in the floor of the testing area. The vehicle is then secured with a tether and the vehicle is brought up to highway speeds for a few minutes until the test is complete.

If the individual with the Mustang utilized some artificial means for getting the vehicle up to 140 M.P.H. - hopefully, it wasn't truly jack stands because that would be way, way too risky to do.
Up north we used to do it on the weekends for fun !!

jk
Heck, you could have just driven on the ice and did one massive burnout to get the speedo up to 140 M.P.H. (and NO, I'm not going to convert the M.P.H. to kilometers for you. 😉

When I was 15 I saw people racing on the lakes where I lived but by the time I turned 16 and had my license it just never seemed to get cold enough to make the ice safe enough to drive on. 🙁

Up here in my home state you can drive on the ice in most places with your car...even a truck.
Hell they groom some of the lakes for snowmobilers with a blazer and giant drag. 🙂

115 in a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI on I15 in Riverside County, CA.

There's no way I could have taken a pic... Car was vibrating so bad I thought my fillings were gonna pop out. But I was late for work... LoL

EDIT: Speedo tops out at 85 like a typical 80's econobox, but cop pulled me over and told me that's how fast I was going... Trying to find the ticket to scan and post. But I've moved twice since, so no promises.

I first was on a lake in a vehicle in Saskatoon for ice fishing. It gets so cold there the ice must have been many feet thick but there is something unusual about it!

Hmmm maybe the oil pressure looks a little low? I dunno

Nope, that is right about where it runs on 5 liter Mustangs. It can run a little higher than that if the car is cold, but at normal operating temp going that fast, it is where it should be. Those guages on the Mustang's are not mechanical anyways, so they don't really give truly accurate readings.

🙂

morkinva-

I just ran out to my car and took a quick shot of my oil pressure guage to give you an idea how big of a range is acceptable. These old push rod 302's are pretty tough motors. A friend of mine once drove his mustang home over an hour with a non-functioning oil pump. He actually expected it to blow on the way, and did not mind since he was planning on doing an engine swap the next weekend. We took the motor apart afterwards and eveything was perfectly fine and we could find no damage. That motor still runs today with almost 300,000 miles on it! :Q

I've seen some great races on ice in the past few years. Usually, a bunch of guys get old, cheap cars and take them on a lake nearby. Then they have massive races in which they slide all over the place, bump into each other, etc.. Looks like soo much fun 🙂

Until the ice breaks...:Q:Q

my '67 Camaro has the optional High speed speedo 160 mph,🙂

the needle bounces after about 90 mph,and i am not sure how fast i have had the car to,
but it was bouncing between 120-160 😉

NO way i would have tried to take a pic at that speed!

Very glad i have the front and rear spoilers good tires, and front disc brakes.

Actually, I grew up in Minnesota. At the time, I had a friend with an older brother that owned a mid-60s Ford pickup truck. His truck broke through the ice and sat at the bottom of the lake until spring. When spring arrived, the truck was towed out of the lake. They thoroughly dried everything out (removed the spark plugs & cranked the engine to get the water out of the cylinders, etc.) After a few days of working on the vehicle, they were successful at getting it running. However, I don't remember them holding onto the vehicle too much longer after that. I'm sure the interior of the vehicle had lots of mold and mildew accumulate and while the engine would run, I'm not too sure how smoothly or reliable it was running.

Its pretty popular here in Canada. In Quebec they have a whole ice-rally series where people buy beaters specifically to race on ice against other people. They have meets every week or so. It seems damn fun!

If anyone can do the math for me I had an 87 camaro 307? 4spd auto going at 4800rpm in 4th gear, speedo stopped at 85 🙁

A friend of mine had an oldsmobile station wagon, think it was a 72 custom cruiser , it had a 455 in it and weighed around 6k empty, we were cruising with eight people so it was close to 8k loaded, the speedo went to 120 and had lots of room after that, I was driving and we were just rolling nice and smooth, the owner was in the back and eventually said "How fast are we going" he sounded panicked so I checkout the speedo and the needle is buried, not even visible, I didnt even realize how fast we were going cause it was so smooth and quiet, just floating along at 130mph+ :Q (about twenty years ago)

I make it a point to drive every car I own over 100mph at least once 😀

the first speeding ticket i ever got,i had a 1964 Plymouth Valiant with the small {170 cubic inch}
slant 6,and 3 on the tree,std shift.

I wanted to see if it would go 100 mph, i found a fairly straight near level road outside of town, and drove about 4 miles, and turned around. got to 95-97 mph,and it would not go any faster.
I held the pedal to the floor for like 3 miles, came over the crest of a real tiny hill, and a bit up the road sat a Policce car. 🙁
I slowed down and drove up to the Cop car,and stopped behind it,as the 2 officers were out and waving at me to pull over.
The older Officer says why were you going so fast?
I told him well i wondered if the slant 6 would have enough power to go 100! 😉
Oficer say's, Nope; the radar said you were going 98,son!

LOL my first ever speeding ticket.
