i just got a speeding ticket today for driving 80 mph on a freeway with a 65 mph speed limit. the ticket doesn't say how much the bail is, only the court date. do any of your guys know how much a ticket like this is gonna cost me and if you guys have any tips on how to lessen this cost? even better, a loop hole that will get me to not have to pay at all! ;)

You may want to look and see if a valid speed test had been conducted on that stretch of freeway, if not, then the most they could get you for is going over a state speed limit. I got out of my only speeding ticket that way.

If you want a loophole or suggestions, you better tell us a bit more about what happened.

I got way too many tickets when I was younger, for 25mph over, its gonna cost ya...

If you wanna be a bitch, ask the cop when was the last time his radar was calibrated. If he can't show that it was calibrated within the last year, you'll either 1) get the ticket postponed 2) get off cause they don't wanna bother with you

Slow down - what was so urgent that caused this speed delta.

10 mph would save you very little time on the highway that you did not waste by happily stopping and waiting for your ticket

15mph over is nothing much. just go to court and plea bargain. right now, u have a 2 pt ticket i assume. the plea bargain will get u down to a no pt ticket and lesser fine. i doubt u will get out of the ticket altogether.

Heh, but did u ever get any tickets for failing math? ;) That's ok you can blame this one on the ex-wife!

Oh and 15 mph is child's play. Don't worry much on this one. Probably no more than $2000 in fines and 6 months without license. No more than 7 days in lockup.

<< I always just set it for court and about 75% of the time, the officer doesn't show. >>

i had to go to court for a speeding ticket a few months back and i was talking to my lawyer about some tips i found online about how to beat speeding tickets. she told me that (at least here in NJ) the thing about how if the officer does not show, u get off unscathed...it doesn't work anymore. she told me that whenever that happens, the court date gets postponed. and IF the officer does not show again...then ur free. but the officer would get fined for those no shows, so its not likely to happen twice for the same ticket.

hmm, i like those odds. but the problem is that i live in Simi Valley, the number one safest city in america. the reason for that is cause we got a crap load of cops. most of the cops in los angeles live here too. so with so many cops to fill in for him, i think the odds the officer will show up is a little higher than usual.

<< Speed Test??? WTF is that??? >>

LoL. I'd think a paramedic would know what speeding is. :) I paid $75 for going 19 over in a 30 zone (thought it was a 45). Didn't have to go to court though. I just mailed the money in the yellow envelope they provide. How nice of them..

:p

You saw that eh Skoorb ?

I was thinking of when I was in CA and the speed limit everywhere was 55 not 65. I was thinking of my old tickets, and they were always speeding on the freeway.

I now live in NV and the limit here is 65 to 75, but don't ever, EVER, speed in a school zone here. The minimum for that is $250 per 5mph over.

Excuse me, I meant to say road test. It's where they come in and do a survey to determine that maximum safe driving speed of that section of the road.

I wasn't trying to be rude, I was just dumbfounded. I had never heard of such a thing before.

What you are talking about wouldn't help out or friend here though, a limit is a limit, unless the conditions are bad and the limit is lowered . In which case he would be even higher over the limit. Posted is posted. If they raise the limit like you are suggesting, it would be after the fact.

Anyone who's anyone will get a ticket before long. My court date was yesterday, so I spent 1hr of my life at the local municipal last night.

I was guilty of 45 (nice cop, hehe) in a 35 (damn good thing it was after 4PM, this was in a school zone). If I were to have just paid the fine, it would have cost me $115. I went to court, got three months of probation, and paid a $45 court fee. If I stay away from the cops for the next three months, the record will be gone. 10MPH over, around here, isn't enough to jack up your insurance premium - just a FYI.

OK so you are in California

On the freeway so i will assume CHP?

If CHP ELECT FOR TRAFFIC SCHOOL!!!!

At 15 over you should have no problem.

Did he clock you or radar?

California REQUIRES a SPEED survey on any road that radar will be used to enforce speed laws. On the freeway they probly have done this and the California Safe Speed law does have a max speed of 70 so even if you fight it you were still speeding. Seeing as this will only drop your fine a few dollars AND REQUIRE THAT YOU ADMIT YOU WERE SPEEDING, I would not go after that. It's gonna be about $150-$200 more than likely. I would Just request traffic school. You do not admit guilt, and no points. CHP USUALLY ARE VERY GOOD ABOUT SHOWING UP TO COURT! And if you plead not guilty you lose the option to go to traffic school.

CA is the worst place to get a speeding ticket, the CHP will give other officers tickets. LMAO As far as the comments just above me, whatever...

I worked with the sheriff's dept there for almost five years and you are going to pay. Go to traffic school if you have that chance because the sheriff's dep and the chp get a premium for court (overtime) so they love court. As far as all this road limit testing is concerned, forget it. You will get laughed out of the place by the judge. Your best case is that you can go to traffic school. You will save the points from your license and you will also save money on your insurance.

Little known factoid on the topic: Some of you know this, but Park Rangers can give traffic citations too...

If you get caught speeding on a surface street WITH RADAR, and you are going less than 65, IF the city or county Hasn't done a speed survey then it's a SPEED TRAP Illegal in the state of California. Legally you can't be found guilty! HOWEVER you need to go to city hall or the county office of transportation, to get a copy of the speed survey (or proof they did not conduct one.)

I know this to be fact as I got out of THREE SPEEDING TICKETS in the city of poway, ca!

I did a 60 in a 35 yesterday.
Not my first, nor my last. Show up to court not dressed like a punk, talk to the DA and they'll knock it down.

WTF? $2000 fines for going 130KM/H on a 105KM/H roadway? JAIL TIME?? Okay, that would be uber-gay ;)

So how do the laws really work in the US? As far as I know, here in quebec you get 5 points for speeding and 1 additional point for every 10km/h over the limit you were driving. The points stay on your record for 2 years. For fines, I think its $1000 fines for going 250km/h or more
