so i got a speeding ticket last week and havn't told my parents yet. as far as i know insurance goes up when you get a ticket (my parents pay it, and this isn't my first so i can't do deffensive driving). does the insurance company notify them or does the rate just go up without explanation? in other words, can i just pay the ticket without them finding out ?

Depends on the state and insurance company. My buddy lost his licence for 90 days once and his insurance company never found out. He just kept paying the insurance while he wasn't driving.

well, the state probably isn't going to notify your insurance company...as long as you pay the ticket before anything shows up in the mail they won't find out for a while

but eventually, if the insurance company decides to "audit" you and runs your driving record, or if something changes with your policy and they run your record it will show up

They'll find out when all of the lawyers start sending you letters, the court mails you documents... etc etc etc....

trust me man, tell them

be a man and tell them up front because they will find out when its time to renew the insurance policy and they see a line on it that says you got another speeding ticket

The insurance policy usually has a list of codes to explain the cost of the premium, but I doubt it will have any specifics such as "Littly Johnny caught speeding." When your parents call the insurance agent to ask why--now that's when you'll be busted :D

Tell them now because there is about a 90% chance they are going to find out anyway and then it's going to be much worse because they will not only find out you got the ticket but also that you tried to hide it from them, thus showing them that you are not trustworthy. If it were me, and you told me about it, yes I'd be pissed but I would help because you were honest. If I had to find out about it on my own, I'd drop you from my insurance policy and make you pay your own and suffer the full brunt of the consequences yourself for lying.

More than likely you'll be getting a note saying that you have points added to your record, not necissarily what you were caught doing.

just plead not guilty, go to court, the DA will talk with you and lower the speeding tix to like 3 parking fines w/ no points, profit.

When I was in HS there were two rules my parents had for allowing me to drive.
1. Maintain a minimum B average.
2. No tickets/accidents.
Failure to abide by either of those rules resulted in me no longer being allowed to drive. It's amazing how such simple rules can motive you.

I've now been driving 16 years and still have 0 tickets.

You're in Texas, so you actually have several options:

1) Deferred Adjudication -- you pay a fine and you're placed on probation for typically 90 days. If you get no tickets during that period, nothing goes on your record. If you get another ticket in the same jurisdiction, BOTH tickets go on your record.

2) Defensive Driving -- I don't know who told you that the first ticket isn't eligible for this option... check again with the court. Again, after completion of the course nothing goes o your record AND you qualify for a discount on your insurance.

3) Pay the Ticket -- goes on your record and your insurance goes up.

I just got a letter from an attorney advertising ticket fine reduction/etc...and my one ticket was received in August of last year. Someone will find out, but it might take a while. :p
