Yes, with a Passport 8500 x50 I got a ticket. It didn't go off, probably because the guy didnt clock me. I was going 63 in a 40 according to him. I'm going to plead not guilty. Any tricks to beat a ticket like this? In court.

If you didn't want it on your record, perhaps you shouldn't have sped.

Good luck, but chances are the ticket is going to stick. The only opinion I see is getting a lawyer, but for a simple speeding ticket its hardly worth it.

You may be able to plea bargain with the prosecutor, and pay an increased fine in return for not getting any points. But I know some prosecutors will not accept a plea for a 20+ MPH over the limit ticket.

Why don't you just man up to your mistake and accept it. Next time you will learn to not speed. A detector isn't meant to avoid any speeding ticket.

What is it meant for?

Like someone already said, usually you can plea it down to a parking ticket, or something else; but with 20 over, it's gonna be a hard thing to do. If its less than 20 over, and its your first offense, you are usually guaranteed to get it reduced, but 20 over is a bit excessive.

So on the ticket where is says what was used to determine your speed, what does it say? Doesn't say RADAR, so what did he use?

My guess would be Laser. If his RADAR detector didn't detect it, most likely it was Laser. And even with a Laser detector, once you detect it, it's too late.

Hell, he probably just made it up or guesstimated.

Doesn't really matter because judges would believe a cops word over Mother Theresa swearing on a bible

Wasn't laser, my radar detects laser.

And on the ticket it doesn't say what he used, under "describe" it just says, "Speeding over limit 63/40" and then in paranthesis "(H.R.)"

I could say he estimated but my best chance is to say he clocked someone else near me and it wasn't me.

Detectors will only detect laser if the beam hits the damn detector. Cops aim for the license plate when lasering, and since lasers have a VERY narrow spread, your radar detector probably would not even pick up the beam. Doesn't matter much... if your detector says laser and you're speeding YOU HAVE BEEN CAUGHT and you might as well pull over and save the cop the trouble.

I would suggest reading up on the many limitations of your radar detector before you put too much faith in it. Even the best radar detectors (yes, even your 8500) are FAR from being ironclad.

Nowadays radar detectors are best used to determine when a cop is in the area "shooting" cars in general. If you use it to save your ass specifically, you're a moron.

Or.....he was using a laser detector, and not radar.

Dag man, you have the RIGHT to demand to see his equipment at the time of the ticket. If he can't PROVE to you (i.e., show you his machine and it recorded the speed) then you're free & clear. Hate that you didn't know that though :(

BTW, I got a 19 over, and I just used my "Prayer for Judgement", paid the lawyer $125 to show in court for me and tell the judge I wanted to use that, and POOF, no record, no driving class, nothing. But I can't do it again for 3 years from the court date or else it'll come back on my record.

your x50 sucks. if you were speeding alone, you suck.

that said, fight it. if it's your first one, they may drop it to a non-moving violation or something lower w/o no points.

Yup, wife and I got pulled as out-of-staters once in a Virginia speedtrap. The cop lied through his teeth about how fast we were going because we saw him well over a mile in advance. The cop said state law said he didn't have to show me anything.

I've never been pulled over and I do 85 in 65's all the time. That being said, those are highways and I watch the median for the po po. Probably not a great idea to do 23 over in a 40 which is most likely a city or suburban road where it's easy for them to hide.

Go to court and tell the judge your radar detector didn't go off, so you shouldn't have to pay your ticket.

At least you will get a laugh out of the judge before he makes you pay the ticket.
