Speeding ticket (sigh)

Update: So I went back to the stretch of road where it occurred just to verify the speed limit was posted and what it was. From where I merged on, and up until he pulled me over there is NO posted speed limit sign contradictory to what he told me and what the ticket says. Also I know that a mile or two further the limit is up to 40-50. I am going to appeal, but how does this help me? (e.g. is it a silver bullet?). I am going to take a small movie of the road also to prove there was no speed limit sign.

Didn't think I'd post about one of the favorite topics here, but I thought there might be a chance I could get some decent advice.

Basically:

Got a speeding ticket for going 50 in a 30 (for $200). I got a ticket when I was 18, but in the past 9years nothing else. Did I realize I was speeding-no, was I--probably. I was heading home at 10pm one a roadway that during this stretch is quite straight. There might have been a couple of cars in front of me within 100-200 yards. Didn't notice that I was catching up to them or anything, but honestly I was zoned out.

That was why I was surprised when I got pulled over, because I had no idea why. The Cop said the posted limit is 30 here (it varies on this road), but I honestly do not remember what the the signs said(I will go check tomorrow). Anyway he said he stopped me over for speeding (I apologized but said I didn't realize it), etc. He took my info and came back with a ticket, when I tried to ask a question he pretty much just said I can appeal it.

I checked some maps, from where he said he got me on radar to when he stopped me was about 600-700 ft. He did not pull me over until AFTER I took a left turn and obviously slowed down to take the left.

Excuse my ramblings because I'm a bit tired, but summarily--worth appealing (e.g. do I stand a fighting chance)?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Like I said, I didn't realize I was even speeding though I may have.

Ok, seriously it's likely worth fighting the ticket because you will almost certainly get the charges reduced & pay less of a fine, plus if they lower the charge to somthing besides speeding your insurance shouldn't increase as much.

I just got a goddamn ticket on saturday too...I drove 3 hours down South and got the ticket 5 mins away from where I was going...goddamnit!!

My only suggestion is that maybe a better acronym would be YASTT, Yet Another Speeding Ticket Thread. YAST implies you were speeding, but isn't conclusive about any repurcussions.

The worst part is that this is the town I grew up in/hometown, so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. The town is basically dead after 8pm, and there was light traffic if anything.

I'm definitely going to check where the posted signs are, because the stretch of road I was one is close to "downtown" (relatively small downtown).

at least in this country it will end up costing you more to fight it than it would to just pay the fine.

How do you figure? I have the vacation time to take. Heck if it was just the one time cost that is one thing, but I don't want my insurance to go up either.

By the way, is it ok to call the insurance agent and ask "if" I get this ticket, what my rate will be ? (I don't want to incrimiinate myself or anything)

You: "Your Honor, I'd like to plead not guilty."

Judge: "I see, and were you speeding?"

You: "Well, I don't know...I was completely zoned out and not paying attention."

Judge: "GUILTY!"

Oh another thing I might add, which I don't know would hurt or help me (Probably hurt), is that the light for my odometer is out (the one for RPM is fine), so it is hard to read my mph at night without turning on the lights....🙁

You didn't have your lights on at night? And what does the odometer light have to do with the speedometer light? 😕

Sorry I meant the lights that illuminate my speedometer (sorry wrong meter 🙂 ). There must be separate lights in my dash for the speedometer and the rpm's, because the left side is illuminated and the right is out, so I really can't read my speed easily. Of course I had headlights on.

Ah, gotcha...might wanna get that fixed.

i dont see why it would hurt. id say ago ahead and take your short video clip and bring it with you. if the speed limit really isnt posted then i think the ticket should be taken away.

slow the fvck down!

we on ATOT condemn speeding, in fact we go a few miles below the posted limit...i personally do 12mph in a 25mph zone.

Sounds like you could get the ticket overturned because there was no posted speed limit. Traffic laws vary by state, but I have read in at least one state that there must be a sign within a certain distance of an intersection.

However, when there is no posted limit, your state probably has a default speed limit. In NJ if there is no posted limit it is 25 mph in a residential area and 50 mph in a non-residential area. If the speed limit was 30 mph, that might be a residential area.
