41 in a 25... a freaking cop was on my street, i just turned into it and was accelerating... the cop was going the opposite direction as me and somehow clocked me. first ticket... shoudl i go to court? how many points is this? i live in NJ by the way...

edit: on the back of the ticket it says 15-19 mph over is $98. 10-14 is 88 and 1-9 is 78. don't know if it is relevant info or not.

Some will say fight it regardless of your guilt or innocence. I say pay the ticket. Sounds like you were in a residential area? If so, why were you going 41?

Radar does not work when a cop is moving, the vibration of the car messes it up. Definitely take this to court.

But, on the other hand, he's got a way out here, yes. The cop has to chase you for 30 seconds (here in oregon) mirroring your speed in order to go by word if they don't have it on radar / laser / photo?.

But laser works either way, IIRC.

i just accelerated right when i turned on... it is a straight road, big hill... if i see anyone (kids, parents) out in their yard or driveway i slow down immediately... i usually just go 35 up the hill.

Pssst. Technically, that's still speeding. ;) Just because you always do it doesn't mean it's ok. Sounds like the only difference is that this time you got caught.

From what the others say, it sounds like you do have a chance to fight it. Regardless, consider learning from this experience. Next time things may not go so well.

Lots of people who realize that there are laws in place for a reason, dumbass. 25 is reserved for residental neighborhoods. That means potential for small children an high pedestrian traffic.

Residential zones and school zones are absolute speed limit areas. A cop has the right to give you a ticket if you're going 1mph over the limit, since you're in an absolute speed zone.

okay! geezus i didn't post this so i would get lectured alright? i just want some advice on how to get it lowered or something. i'm not saying i was right or that i am allowed to "break the law" and not get caught or whatever. obviously a good number of people who get speeding tickets go to court and i just want the best way of getting the ticket reduced. that good enough for you ffmcobalt? now get the hell out of this thread.

i dont know any you, but $98 for speeding 15-19mph over the speedlimit sounds cheap.. i'd just pay the fine and do traffic school if needed/possible so no points go on your driving record.

Find out if you can a driving class and have it reduced to a non-moving Violation. If not, and you want to fight it, when the cop gets on the stand ask for his license to use a radar gun, if he does not have it ask the judge to dismiss the case as he can't prove he is trained and licensed to use the gun.

VERY LONG SHOT to fight a ticket, so try and get it reduced, you will probable lose if you fight, but if they give you no choice then go for it, BUT BE NICE, don't come off sounding like a A__Hole.

It's not "speed general-area" it's "speed limit" - a cop has the right to give you a ticket if you're 1mph over the speed limit AT ANY TIME. WTF is up with you "law scholars"??

< psst >Traffic School. If it's available in your state, it won't save you any money on the ticket, but if you don't get another one within the statutory time, the violation will be removed from your record, so your insurance won't get bumped. In some states, you can do the whole thing on line. :)

Come on Nik, tell us how you really feel........ LOL!
I'd fight it, and slow down.
Speeding(any amount!) in your own neighborhood is like crapping in your own bed. It doesn't save you two seconds, and makes lasting impressions with the nieghbors.

What kind of a dumbass goes 35 or 45 in a residential zone?
I admit I'll speed on major streets or highways.. I'll go 70km/h in a 50km/h (or 45 in a 30), and I'll go 130km/h on the highway (80mph), but rarely will I go over 40km/h in a 30km/h (25 in a 20), anyways many streets in residential areas are 50km/h (30mph) and only marked as 30km/h in certain places or when there's a "watch for our children" sign, or if there's a school. Otherwise it's 30mph. Even in these zones I won't go higher than 35, 40 if it's nighttime. Save speeding for the places where kids aren't likely to cross your path, like major boulevards and highways.
